IDM's Vintage Year?

Well, that'll be 1994 for me...I've been listening to loads
of stuff recently that came out in this most hallowed of
years...amazing really, almost all the CDs I rescued from me
old man's loft in Wales were from 1994, as well as a
disproportionate number of my top 120 that I originally
brought over here...what was it about that year? :-)

Many top-notch albums have a ten-year anniversary just round
the corner then...of course some notable ones celebrate
theirs this year too...SAW 85-92 and the Brown Album spring
immediately to mind... :-)

damn...so that makes next year the 10 year anniversary of
Vintage IDM...

:) You are just so funny, Merg!

Well I try... :-)

Nah, seriously, it's just weird how much fantastic stuff
came out that year...must have been people who got inspired
by Orb, Aphex, Orbital et al in 91 or 92 having their stuff
released, as well as releases by them too of course :-)

Definetly '94 for me too - The sound completely changed from
being kind of quirky and raw to really well produced and
sophisticated.

I burned ICBYD for a mate yesterday (don't tell anyone!) and
I'm 99% it said 95, RDJ was 96 and SAWII 94...more than one
in the same year never happens!

1994 is a pretty good year. All began to happen for me in
1994. Didn't 'Spanners' come out in '94 or was that '95?

I think, maybe, 2001.
Aphex Twin - Drukqs
Squarepusher - Go Plastic
Plaid - Double Figure
Bogdan Raczinski - My love I love
Autechre - Confield

Well certainly '94 was really very much a breakthrough year
for 'IDM'. I do hate that term.

Spanners was 1994 yeah...

Now you mention it, I don't like it either, but I thought
people here used it...doh!

Would you prefer electronica?

the time is now! loook to the future and forget about the
past! all we can do is learn from our mistakes and keep our
minds open to beauty

I agree with Nexus 6, 2001 was indeed a great year for
music.

(there I said it) :-)

Looks like '95 was my electronica (I prefer that to IDM)
year then!
I think as soon as a scene gets "properly" labelled by the
press/media, it starts to age - Electronica is good cos it's
so open, like "Jazz" - But you start to catagorise it too
much, like "Be-bop" or "Trip hop" and it gets stuck in a
decade and ages...

though its not idm, slowdive's 'souvlaki' came out in 94,
and its one of my favorite albums.

portishead's 'dummy' also came out that year
as well as squarepusher's first ever release, 'the
stereotype ep'.

autechre's 'amber' came out in 94, not tri repetae.

I've got quite a few mix tapes from '88-'92 era - Acid
house, Trance & Hardcore stuff - And the thing that gets me
the most is that the music still sounds absolutely awesome,
even by today's standards.
I've been going through really old rave & techno tapes
lately, the music is incredible, it's all so perfectly
balanced between what works in a club/warehouse and what you
want to listen to at home...
I'm mainly talking about the very early 90's stuff, before
"rave" started to get commercialised.
I just wonder where are all those producers who were writing
the classic hardcore, trance, acid, etc.. back then - Wonder
how many of them are still releasing music today and who
they are...?

i was convinced all the belgian new-beat from the late 80s
was in fact the work of 1 person

haha, I'd be so interested to know!
There were so many great rave/hardcore/acid tunes back then
- All made by completely faceless producers, most people
didn't even know...
FSOL have been around a while - They were behind a great
many classic hardcore track from the early 90's under loads
of guises. And all those Hummanoid acid tracks in the 80's!
