what do you think are the best sidescrollers out there??

an idea just popped (not pooped) in my head. it would be
cool to make one featuring a rockhopper penguin that tries
to save Antarctica from a bunch of...uhh...badasses. he
would do kung fu as well as house a hansome assortment of
futuristic weapons. sadly, i lack the programming
essentials, so it's all just wishful thinking. well, i could
do the music score ;)

besides that, my fave sidescrollers are the Megaman games,
Mario games, Earthworm Jim, and Bionic Commando (NES)

Sidescrollers? Does that include Streets of Rage 2 or
Thunderforce IV? Well those are my 2.

The Viewtiful Joe demo is quite nice. My favourite old one
would have to be......

let's not forget Final Fight, Flashback, & Smart Ball for
SNES...and all the Metroids.

Oddworld for PS1 kicks ass too.

Defender is the bestest by 400 % followed by Scramble which
is amazing too.

My fave side scrollers are from the 16 bit era.

SNES
Contra III (YES!)
Castlevania 4 and X
Super Metroid (not a traditional side scroller per se, but
the perspective is there)
Lost Vikings
Super Ghouls and Ghosts
Zombies Ate My Neighbours!
Donkey Kong Country 1-2-3
Super Mario World of course!
Yoshi's Island, hideously underrated because the SNES was
pretty much dead by that time.
Brawl Brothers
Super Double Dragon
Kirby Superstar

Genesis
Gunstar Heroes
Vectorman 1-2
Sonic 1-2-3-Knuckles
Streets of Rage 1-2-3 (not so much 3...)
Revenge of Shinobi/Shinobi 3 (NOT Shadowdancer, blech)
Rolling Thunder 2-3
Contra Hard Corps
Castlevania Bloodlines
Rocketknight/Sparkster
Flashback

So many more, ugh...

I agree with -V-, Viewtiful Joe looks great, nice throwback
to the old school. Capcom showing that they still care.

Ninja Gaiden was DEFINITELY one of the best! Can't believe
we've gone so long without one... it's 3D now, for Xbox, and
I'm worried.

Out of all of those I think I'd pick Flashback and the
Genesis/Mega Drive Sonic series of games.
Always amazes me how they created so much kickass art out of
a tiny palette with a handfull of colours in any of those
16-bit console games. The Zen Art Of Pixelpushing indeed.

Oooh ooh, and my all time favourite arcade game: Final
Fight!
I guess I can't omit Streets Of Rage either. Hours of
multiplayer fun.
Hmm, speaking of which, many many moons ago I used to be a
game on the Genesis which was totally brilliant, but I
really cant recall it's name. All my sketchy memory
remembers is that it was something about a Computer or a
Virtual game or something that had gone wrong (possibly),
and it consisted of lots of overhead 'screens' where you
picked up a new person on every one who had an individual
skill that you used for getting to the next level (or
something). One of the guys had a bazooka. It kicked ass.
Er, does this ring a bell for anyone?

the best sidescrolling games (or just video games in
general) are the sonic the hedgehog games on genesis and
sega cd. i recently took out my sega genesis + cd and have
been playing these games everyday, especially sonic 3 +
knuckles (i rarely play video games so this is a lot).
