Love to listen to them, love to make em, love to think
about them!!
Except I don't have enough. I want to get more. Anyone
else feel the same way and have recomendations?
There were loads of them back in the days of classic rock,
what with rock operas and all. Pink Floyd and the Who come
to mind. They seem to be a bit rarer these days. My
interest was re-sparked with the recent nine inch nails
topic. kid606's soccergirl EP almost fits the bill, as does
so takahashi's 30/30.. but few seem to have the cool
narrative quality and thematic consistency.

thanks.. will look into these.
I have OK computer.. never exactly thought of it as a
concept album but I'll go with it. I have never even made
it all the way through it anyway, hehehe.

I'm not a big fan of them, or the concept of... erm,
concepts. Anyone could find a reason to call an album that
flows a ''concept'' album... and any album worth your time
should flow anyway.

But The Who Sell Out is my favorite ''concept'', like some
strange pirate radio station playing awesome (Who) songs,
complete with commercial jingles. Beeee-rilliant!

however good that album is, I wouldn't call that a
concept-album though.

I mean, what's the concept.. "do a bunch of songs, a few
written myself, mostly covers"..?

you're kidding right? That cd sucks ass... it's technically
considered a concept album, but I fail to see what it is...
well, what I should say is, I fail to see how the songs
convey the concept... cause I do kinda know what the concept
is supposed to be...

a concept album is a pompous way of making an album with
each song having the same theme as the next. I hate Them.

Trout Mask and Ok Computer are NOT concept albums.

=)

There are concept albums and there are themed albums.

Concept album: Pink Floyd - The Wall. It tells a story, the
lyrics are very important as is the flow.

Themed album: FSOL - Dead Cities. Some of the ideas focussed
on degredation of technology, urban decay, etc etc. However,
it doesn't tell a story as such... the theme is of the album
overall, rather than song to song. OK Computer could also
fit in this category, along with a lot of other CDs
regularly called Concept Albums.

offline xf from Australia on 2003-07-13 11:11 [#00776911]
Points: 2952 Status: Lurker

herm. thing is, dead cities definitely has a huge flow to
it which each song makes up; perhaps it isn't a story, but
it definitely is something.

i'd say dead cities is still a concept album; just perhaps
with the story not as evident as the wall.

offline purlieu from Leeds (United Kingdom) on 2003-07-13 11:32 [#00776936]
Points: 1228 Status: Lurker

Oh yes, it has a flow, but I think... each track makes
perfect sense on its own, too. It wasn't written as an album
(there are a lot of tracks that weren't included), merely
many themed pieces on their own. Then the songs were ordered
and mixed to make the album work as a whole.
It's a subtle difference, but I think there is one.

offline xf from Australia on 2003-07-13 11:38 [#00776941]
Points: 2952 Status: Lurker

fair enough; i've just listened to parts of the album again
and i'll agree with you. each song is very themed, not all
directly relating with each other, it's only the actual
sound itself which has the flow.

that said though, it's a bloody good flow. fsol - dead
cities is one of those albums i've enjoyed in its entirely
immensly quite a few times.

now you've got me thinking about downward spiral/fragile
from nin.

what about radiohead's kid a?
a concept album for "the generation that will inherit the
earth when we've wiped evrything out'" about apocalyptic
visions, an orwellian present and future, the fear of
globalisation destroying the world, the first cloned child
named kid a and so on.
my favourite concept album. and it's the radiohead record
where you can hear aphex twin and pink floyd influences the
best.

where did you find all of this in Kid A (great album, except
the last track, btw)?

°_°

=)

i thought i read somewhere the title, 'Kid A', was named
after a children's book, Kid A and something about the
alphabet...

I'm sorry to bump this.. it's not intentional, I just didn't
realize all the replies this got an I wanted to comment.
Purlieu: Actually, I have toyed with this idea myself, you
just put it into words for me (thanks!). I hesitated to use
the term 'concept album' in reference to certain albums that
share more of a theme than a storyline. However, I think
you're right in saying that the two terms are often mistaken
for synonyms. I myself was convinced I had made up the term
'theme album'.
However, with the idea of a 'concept album,' I think this
could be taken one of two or three ways:
1. An album that has a narrative quality (NIN's 'the
downward spiral' & the who's 'tommy' or 'quadrophenia')
2. An self-aware album that is about a concept (Jake
Mandell's 'Love songs for machines' comes to mind.. or
Pram's 'the Museum of Imaginary Animals')
3. An non-self-aware album that is supposed to be a concept
in and of itself(Eno's 'Music for Airports' or Raymond
Scott's Infant and Baby music.. stuff that serves some
utilitarian purpose).
There is probably overlap too. And this is not definitive,
just some ideas.
Gonna check out Kid A a little more perhaps..

Jake Mandell's 'Love songs for machines'

How is that by the way? I've only heard one track and I've
been meaning to pick it up or hear more...

hey fleet!
To be honest, I have only heard one or two tracks myself.
It's been on my 'to get' list for a while now also. Sorry!
It just popped into my head as a decent example.

(hmm, i love the last track of Kid A now as well, it was
just harder to get than the other ones =) )

i'm listening to Isis - Oceanic right now. it's a concept
album too, about a man drowning... mostly the
description/impressions of the drowning and the impressions
at the moment of death, not a real "story" with background
and all... and lots of instrumental parts too...

really great.
(you might need to get used to the voice of the singer
though)

I'm not that fond of concept albums really... sometimes I
feel I have to listen to it from start to finish, and most
concept albums have a lot of filler... but themed albums are
nice... I like albums that follow a theme...

I don't normally go for that sort of thing but I really like
The Mars Volta's 'De-loused in the Comatorium'.

You could spend a lifetime working out the lyrics.

Fernz > Ænima is a great album, sure... but what makes it a
concept-album in your view?!

KainiIndustries > i like De-Loused In The Comatorium too,
but all these scientific (? ) words in the lyrics are
annoying, it makes it look pretentious/geeky (do they all
make sense in the lyrics at least??)..; = /

very good album though.

same goes with At The Drive-In - Relationship Of Command
(with a bit less scientific words, and even better music imo
=))

Well, my favorite concept album is still The Who Sells Out,
and likely always will be. Now I hear loose concepts in
everything, the term doesn't hold any water for me anymore.
The Kinks did a lot of clever concept work, and backed up
the pretention with da hooks.
