 | holy SMOKES!!!
never heard of the book until today, i was looking at my
BF's list of books to read and that was in it. it provoked a
question about how he heard about it, and what it was
 about........

he said someone from Mogwai went on and on about how great
it was.....i looked it up and found out what it was a sequel
of sorts to trainspotting (which i didn't read but did see
the movie) and thought i might give it a read.

damn phiz you're on same strange wavey length wit peepz
 today! ahhahah

 | i was gonna get Glue but i saw that and got it instead, Glue will be next i think.

i heard that Jonny Lee Miller is the only one to turn down a
part in the film, and sickboy is the main carachter of sorts
so, idunno, maybe hes holdin out for more cash.

its a struggle readin as if you are Begbie or Spud though,
and you seem to picture the charachters more as you read
 this one.

 | I dunno why Lee Miller would turn it down, he hasn't exactly set the world on fire since has he? :D

The main sticking point was obviously that McGregor and
Danny Boyle stopped talking after Boyle cast Di Caprio in
The Beach - one possible reason why Renton isn't in the book
that much, if the film was made and relations were strained,
he would only have to do a week or so on set. But apparently
they made up this year. Robert Carlyle is all for it. The
main problem is still McGregor, he doesn't think the book is
as good as it could've been and so doesn't want to film it.

 | Hahaha, that ruptured penis scene nearly made me puke the first time I read it!

Jonesy: I know a lot of people felt the same way. All of
Welsh's books aside from Trainspotting have been heavily
criticised in the media. Glue's not without it's faults - it
can be slow, characters drift out of the story for no reason
and the final third with the introduction of the popstar is
a tad wonky - but it's still, imo, his second greatest book.
I mean, it gave the world Juice Terry!

 | Yeah, Juice Terry was a good character but the book suffered from too many cliches; especially regards clubbing etc.

Did you not rate Filth more highly? I think Trainspotting,
Filth and Porno are his greatest; the holy trinity if you
 will.

 | I did rate Filth very highly when I first read it - over Trainspotting in fact - but once I re-read all the books
Glue was much stronger I thought. Filth is a brilliantly
angry book but it took it's inspiration from too many books
I'd already read. At the end of the day all his books are
marred by some inept writing at some point, it's the really
good bits you end up remembering.

 | Yeah, definitely. He sets his stuff in Aberystwyth mostly. But its not inward-looking Welsh crap. He's like a more
lyrical, poetic Welsh. 'Grits' (his first) is good but
Sheepshagger blew me away. His books since are called Kelly
& Victor (set in Liverpool) and he has a new one out called
 Stump.

 | Went to Waterstones, got Sheepshagger and Stump. Sound up my alley judging from the synopsis on the back. I've had a peek
at Sheepshagger and well, it looks like Irvine Welsh
doing... Welsh. Hope it can carry it off. Gonna be strange
reading this as I wrote a short story in pretty much the
same style - only "Swansified" - after I read Trainspotting.

 | I finished Sheepshagger last week - I'm on Stump now, which seems far more like a typical Welsh book.

I enjoyed SS quite a bit, if you can enjoy a book with
horrendous passages like it contained. The sheer length of
his poetic descriptive passages was sometimes too much (as
was the temptation to skip them) but it was powerful stuff.
It's worth reading for the rave scene - which rang very true
to me - and the final chapters which literally blew my head
 off. Arf.

I see what you mean about the descriptive tracts. Usually I
recoil from such lengthy descriptions but I found that was
what I liked about it. He managed to work it with the west
 Wales vernacular really well IMHO.
