how can anyone make money out of such a bunch of crap
noise...

"here is my new album...i recorded it by electrocuting a
microphone with 10.000 volts...and that's it" ....

Give me some arguments why the fuck Merzbow can sell...

although i hate afx's kpta's i like merzbows stuff, it's not
'all the same noise' really, if you take an effort to listen
at it that is
as a matter of fact i listened a merzbow cd throughout last
evening and it didn't annoy me at one point, instead it had
quite a calming effect on me, seriously
i like his stuff

its all about getting used to the noise. what the hell, the
first time i heard afx and stuff, it sounded kind of noisy
to me.

i have some merzbow but i never listen to it. i find it
kinda interesting but not very pleasant or impressive. it's
obvious that it doesn't take much effort to produce, just
look at how prolific this guy is.

it's a pun on the phrase punks not dead and a statement that
punk is also not opitomised by the band the dead kennedys .
i've never heard the track but it's probably fierce iimagine

he's prolific cos it's his work and he enjoys making it I
think - also i read he made it an aim to work under an
ethic where he works hard - also he probably makes fuck all
and sells fuck all

Have you ever heard this Aphex Twin guy ? What the fuck is
that, it's not music ! Just some random beats over some
tuneless melodies ! How anybody could possibly enjoy this is
beyond
me..

i don't get all these discussions about how it is made, how
quickly/easy it's made or if samples are used etc.
as long as some people like to listen to it it's ok imo.
after all that's the most important right? enjoying to
listen to it

and how about some ambient (e.g. SAWII) tracks, some are
repetetive as fuck and rarely have a real melody, it's just
this room-filling sound that does it, imo it's the same with
noise only noise is on the other end of the music-genre list
than ambient

i don't know if anyone understands what i mean

Merzbow live was one of the most intense acts i've scene.
microphone-thrown-in-a-generator-thats-on-fire-in-a-blender
And the fact that the person behind all of the ear bleeding
-thats-also-on-fire noise was this quiet, retained, stern
faced man with specs just added a certain level of eeriness.
At one point in the show (ATPLA2002), he actually had to
lean back and tell the sound guys to turn it down. It was
fucking intense. But i loved it. And about the whole
"prolific" argument...Hey, venetian releases a whole lot of
shit too, that doesn't make it "Easy".

Morton, you're exactly right. A lot of noise is just like
dark ambient, just increased in volume by about 1000%.

And the way he sells records is by making music that people
like. That's how. Because it doesn't appeal to you doesn't
mean it is without merit.

Merzbow CDs to get - 1930, often recommended, but worth it
for the title track alone.
If you want to shell out a bit more cash, my favourite of
his newer stuff (which is more electronic and loop based) is
the 4CD box 24 Hours: A Day Of Seals.

true,
if you like it, more power to you.

but i think the question here is

why do people like it? what is there to like specifically
about merzbow's noise as opposed to say the noise coming out
of my t.v. when the cable is out?

Ambient and noise aren't on opposite ends of the spectrum.
Push through dark ambient and you end up on the shores of
noise.

oh i'm not saying you should get anything of his, and i
haven't heard most of his stuff by far (since he released
over 200 albums), but 'a taste of merzbow' might be
something to check out

or his collaboration with russel hasswel on warp
'satanstornade', it's a bit different though, i own
'collapse 12 floors' too, i like it, it's somewhat
softer/lower noise. but i read it's limited (to 621 copies
(?!))

so when you take 'a taste of merzbow' you can decide wether
you swallow it or spit it out ;)

ahh wicked - proper discussion not like last night -
what do yuo consider noise -
i feel pretty fucked off that everything i do is
soundtracked by some mulitbillion dollar shite spewing muzak
company - every single time i leave the house to get some
milk or a pair of shoes or whatever i get some new crap opop
tune in my head.
you can't get rid of the sound of your tv unplugged it's a
static sound - it's not been created to have human drama,
ruptures and aggression or be all consuming or
transcendental ort just brutally attacjking like alot of
"noise" music

when you saw him live, was he playing recognizable cuts?
what was it about the performance that made it so intense?
Just the volume? Do people dance at his shows?

no way is v-snares even close to being as prolific as
merzbow. doesn't merzbow have a 100 cd box set or
something?

Well, how about this,
Recommend to me a Merzbow album. Don't just give me the
title of the album. tell me why it's a good album.
what should i look for when listening to it? what makes
this particular album stand out from the rest of his albums?
What makes this particular album stand out from other noise
artists?

i'll try to locate and listen to the album. I am genuinely
curious what Merzbow fans enjoy about this noise. Like i
said, i own probably 2 or 3 merzbow albums to which i have
listened once or twice and they have since sat collecting
dust on my cd rack. Maybe i bought "dud" releases?

t-shirt has artwork yes, haven't seen it though, just read
it
on that link to ebay you can see what's in this merzbox

i just read the merzbook was banned in china :)

The MERZbook has created a stir before it even hit the
presses! In an amazing turn of events, the MERZbook was
prohibited from being printed in China as a result of
officials from the New China News Agency viewing some of the
more confronting photographs and artwork.

"It's really just a question of what we call art," said a
stunned Roger Richards, Director of Australian music label
Extreme.

The MERZbook features a biography of Japanese Noise musician
Masami Akita, a.k.a. Merzbow. Akita is notorious not only
for his music but his interest in bondage and fetish
culture, having published more than a dozen books on these
topics.

It seems only natural that the book should feature bondage
pictures in 'Kinky Ikebana' the chapter dealing with the
subject. But, it seems that officials just aren't ready for
Akita's broad-minded view of the world. Bondage is a highly
developed art form in Japan, becoming an esthetically
disciplined and technically sophisticated over centuries of
practice. This sensibility has not carried over to China.

The MERZbook is part of the MERZBOX, a strictly limited
edition release by Extreme. It commemorates the prodigious
talent of MERZBOW with 50 CDs and CD-ROM, the aforementioned
book together with a deluxe poster, stickers, postcards,
t-shirt and medallion, encased in a custom designed
Fetish-rubber box.

The Chinese censorship clampdown has meant that the MERZbook
must now be printed elsewhere to ensure that content is not
compromised. Readers can now be assured of a publication
intact as the publishers and subject intended.

i understand. its kinda funny because, it's always easier
for me to say why i don't like music than to say why i like
it. maybe it's just one of those 'can't account for taste'
kind of things.

wow, interesting.

in the context of bondage and fetishism, his noise tends to
make more sense to me. bondage is like sex without the
emphasis on the actuall sex part. Merzbow noise is like
sound without the music part.

or something? am i close?

he Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in Paris has proudly
played host to the ground-breaking "Migrateurs" exhibition
by controversial Japanese artist, performer, composer and
author Masami Akita, a.k.a. Merzbow. This starling
exhibition incorporated an installation of the MERZBOX, a
monumental multi-media project celebrating the history,
music and artwork of Merzbow.

Get 24 Hours: A Day Of Seals.
It's intense, but it doesn't seem atall random, it's
structured. But most of all, it's intense... Sleeping White
Whale is fucking fantastic. It really sucks you in.
To be honest, I find some of his work *is* crap. It seems
very uninspired, and doesn't do anything for me atall.
However, some of it, like A Day Of Seals, really captures
me, sucks me in... it's so much like ambient music, whilst
not actually sounding like it, in a way.
