how do you catalogue your music....i put them into record
labels and artists, and if i can be bothered...into release
date....but what i really want to know is,
is there anybosy out there who copies audio cd's and puts
them in with their originals...

The way I do it is I buy music, listen to the CD on
rotation, when not listening to it I leave it lying around,
then when the CD is totally scratched and wrecked I download
the album.

Yes I am :D

I have bought SAWII 3 times on CD :P

I plan on buying everything again soon, and maybe keeping
these ones in good condition, but I have over 1000 bought
CD's, so I won't be replacing all of them.

I bought two copies off SAWII at once when a local music
store was selling it for £4 a copy, and because I bought 2
I got them together for £7 :D I also got SAWI for
£3.50...so the the price of a shitney spears album I got
two copies of SAWII and one copy of SAWI :D

i just do em in two rows, with warp thru to skam, rephlex,
planet-mu, then just whatever i'm listening to at the time,
i'm not to bothered where they go really

I normally dip in and out, I have my favourites, but I don't
think there is one CD that I would say I am ashamed of
having bought...a few are shit but they are in the minority
:P

These days if I fancy listening to just one track I just
download it and listen to it, I figure it's not a problem
because I have already bought the album.

I have an obsession with my cds... I am always afraid of
them being scratched, so I take too much care...

I have them just catalogued by artist name, thats it.

then I have an excel file with all my cds, catalogued by
artist, music style, release date and extra notes

huh, this may take me long time
how long did you need to arrange those 180?
if its less than a day i'll start doing mine if its more im
pretty sure i wont bother :)

of course less than a day... just a few hours...

take it this way:

its a few hours listening to great music on you stereo while
you make the excel list...

I wouldnt try to put all the details from tthe begining...
that would be too slow and you would never finish...

start first just making the list with the release titles and
the artists... then try to go into more detail... in excel
you can always choose the order you want the list to appear
with..

i started doing that excel list (just titles and artist
names), but i always fail to update that thing regulary
and above everything - my comp chrushed about a year ago,
and i lost that excel file (and i already listed something
more than 600 cds)

well, i'll do this for sure!

physically, i have three CD towers, one for electronic music
(smaller), one for other music (taller - also i put a
cardboard with rei ayanami pic over it) and one for CD-Rs
and CD-ROMs... audio CDs alphabetically listed in each
category... but i'm starting to lack space, i'll have to
re-organize it soon

also i have a simple CD list here (but i also counted
the mp3s) (also it is sorted by first name, i.e. Peter
Gabriel will be sorted in P not in G) for june...

an older list, handwritten and with 5-star ratings:
part eins - part zwei

my collection is an absolute mess. the only part that is in
some sort of order is my cds, but that is quickly falling
apart (every time i listen to a cd, i just throw the
previous one in the case of the one i will be listening to.
so even if i try to find a cd by it's case, it usually has
the wrong cd in it). i am just finally getting enough
records that i need to have a new way of organizing them
(some sort of shelf or something). what's the worst is my
cd-rs! i always figure, hell, i can reburn it for myself,
i've got the record laying around somewhere, but that way
i've got to go through unecessary cd-rs because i don't take
care of them.

a week or two ago, I spotted a card rack being thrown out
from my local bargain store (this thing is the size of a
chest of draws, and is designed to display cards)
so, I'm going to slot my vinyl into it, clear for all to
see, and the metre high stack of cds on top

I just have to move out into my own place (again), until
then, it's comfortably waiting on the front lawn for anyone
else to "steal"

CDs are alphabetical order by artist, then sub-divided by
release date. Albums and singles/eps seperate.

Vinyl is more complex- a hybrid of record size, period,
genre, label, artist etc. Works well as I can find most
stuff in under 10 seconds.

offline xceque on 2003-07-04 06:04 [#00766925]

I have 4 sections:
compilations; in alphabetical order,
Warp releases; consisting of EPs in catalogue number order,
then albums in catalogue number order, then cassette albums
in cat# order (each cat# ordered thus: first vinyl backup
CDRs, then original CD versions, then promo vinyl backups,
then promo CDs),
everything else; sorted in alphabetical order of release
within alhpabetical order of artist,
and finally a section for "recent" acquirements (quite large
cos "recent" goes back at least a year); in no order
whatsoever

I've also got two big piles of random CDRs just on whatever
spare surface I can find.

Vinyl is in three sections, both in order of wherever I
fancy putting them (ie; none)

But then I have only a couple of hundred vinyl or so (not
hard to flick through to find anything) whereas I have 3000+
CDs so I need a system or I'd spend hours just trying to
find something.

sheite xceque , that's a lot of music you have there....
i love to re-organise and dispaly my music collection, coz
that's what it is, it's a collection, my favourite pass time
and 'hobby' if you like....
has anyone seen the film high fidelity...now, that guy has a
lot of vinyl, and he enjoys categorising them in abstract
ways...."biographically" (his life, the order he got them
in!) well... i understand his intentions there, this hobby i
have of collection music, it's a representative of my life,
well, some of it is.... and i celebrate that!!! lol
if you have a collection that is just strewn around the
room...is it a collection at all? or is it just an obsolete
unimportant inanimate object you have cluttering up your
room?

i put them into two categories: major label\indie rock. the
other category is electronic\avant garde\whatever else.

im a cd freak, i buy plastic cases for the paper cd
cases\digipacks(you should do this, the cases will be in
horrible condition without them in the future, just go look
at those records your parents still have lying around and
tell me that most of them still look good)
