Now, I know that many musicians get a lot of their
inspiration by listening to other people's work, but I know
there are musicians (I'm pretty sure many of we bedroom
composers fit in this category) who are inspired by an image
or experience.

I wrote a killer ambient/noise track once after laying in my
friend's backyard for an hour looking at the stars. I also
wrote a great down-tempo garage track after seeing a tan
girl in a white dress.... hmmmm....

50% of the time, images usually inspire to write ambient
music, or ambient music creates images in my mind.

any one else experienced this sort of inspiration?

i wrote a track once, after walking in the snow for an hour,
during a blizzard at 2 am...

it was surreal

one of my favourite tracks i ever made came after a weekend
camping by a loch in the north of scotland.
we'd been listening to the boards a lot in pure tranquility
outside.
The view of the water through the campfire was stunning.

Most of my inspiration in life comes from two things...my
girlfriends face first thing in the morning, she always
looks her best to me then (asleep with her gob
shut...j/k)...and the docks, there is something well special
about the docks.

i usually get my inspiration by sampling piles of old
obscure vinyl and picking through the spoils.

or by smoking a phatty-boom-batty bowl.

sometimes i'll just be working out some beat pattern in my
head all day and first thing when i get home i try to throw
it down.
i don't usually have any specific inspirations.

usually i have to write my ideas down if i'm away from home.
because if i don't, even if i have the melody in my head all
day, as soon as i get home, it's fucking gone.

i think some einstürzende neubauten tracks were inspired by
paintings or other works...

"it is as black as malevitch's square", "mela mela
mela mela melancholia"
...

also some places in berlin...

(Sabrina for example is full of visuals - all are
obvious, except maybe that red-gold-black could be the
german flag backwards. i don't know why the german flag
backwards, they also had the german eagle upside down in
another artwork from Fünf Auf Der Nach Oben Offenen
Richterskala)

Online for a while last night...

I quite often find inspiration by looking at the clouds in
the sunset but i can be inspired by anything at any time it
just has to catch me unawares.

i just remembered.... there was this series of six tracks i
wrote inspired by railroad cars a long time ago... some of
my noisy-as-fuck polyrhythmic stuff... there were 6 mixes i
made of one song and i made each song using letters and
numbers off of cars. And each mix was named after the
letters. Each digit was a drum noise and some letters became
notes of the melody.

Weird stuff.

I always get crazy ideas when I'm up in the graveyard behind
my house at night walking around like some weirdo deep in
weirdo thought. I've got this horror movie (zombie flick)
worked out in my mind inspired by and set in that place.

Shatterproof > it is mythological... Zeus turning himself
into a rain of gold to come into a prison where (i don't
remember who) was locked...

This track was made based on Silos like this in my
home town and also a water intake building for the local
powerplant.

I'd have to say my most inspirational object is ecnadniarb's
girlfriend.

I started making a track inspired by going out for
late-night/early morning high-speed drive out in the
country, awe-inspiring. Sadly the track was never finished.

would inspire someone... in fact... i think i feel a song
coming on...

Indeed a great pic, Ceri JC. The song sounds like it
"belongs" to that picture.
The tune feels eerie, lonely. ^^
