hi there...

i don;t know if any of you ever think that you may not
listen to autechre or afx etc...in ten years time...but
somtimes i do...
i listen to such a wide variation of crazy muic that is
electronica based, and i have bought so much music since i
first started collecting, it has almost become habvbit
forming to buy listen and appreciate the latest afx,
autechre etc....
i thought i was a non-spoon fed music lover, "don;t feed me
any of this pop chart crap"....but, really, do we like it
that much....
just ask yourself this....if a track you listen to for the
first time, if it wasn't by afx or autechre, etc....would
you still like it...

the music scene

I have a load of tracks on my computer now by people off
this board. I have burnt CD's containing them as well. I
like music that I like...probably my most listened to tracks
at the moment are by mc_303_beatz off this board.

actually, i think the fact that a lot of us so dogmatically
listen to what has now become the canon of electronic music
(autechre, et al.), it makes us appreciate new and
innovative music even moreso (provided we are not
closed-minded about other genres and styles). when i first
heard "in flight" by lusine icl, i was in heaven! here was
finally something that was in the idm-vein while retaining a
wonderfully melodic sensibility - and sure, things like
proem have already been around for a while then, but this
really struck a chord with me.

as far as i'm concerned, all that matters for me is that the
music is sufficiently innovative and unique. it doesn't have
to be something i'm familiar with already for me to actually
appreciate it.

i need help....no, seriously....do we really know what we
like about electronic music, or are we just completely
overwhealmed by the infinate sounds that keep coming out to
us?
sorry about being heavy on the philosophy here

If you only listen to electronic music then you are
depriving yourself of so much. I will listen to anything at
all...in fact I lie in the sun listening to nature and the
docks combined. It is fucking cool...

i like the link perth guy!!

yeah, i find it hard to listen to electronica all the time
and i have been listening a lot more to minimal guitar based
stuff, like the neil young type thing...anyone know this
stuff (dead man soundtrack) anyways, i have become a little
more chilled out and less fussy, it's great listening to
this kind of ambient when you have just bought a new set of
free standing 100watt floor speakers too ( brag )

Ya know when I discovered this stuff I was so blown away -
it was so much better, so much more layered and complex and
imaginative than anything else - that a letdown was
inevitable. So fuck it, my heavy electronic listening period
is over, and I listen to lots of jazz and indie and whatnot.
Disco, death metal, folk, whatever.

lately i've been digging out things i have hardly listened
to for ages (mainly due to the fact that when i originally
got them, i've listened to them nearly to death).

every now and then i get to a point where i've gotten so
oversaturated with a particular genre that for a while i
won't touch it with a 10 foot pole.

i guess i try to match the music i listen to at any given
moment on any given day to my mood at the time. lately i've
cut back completely on underground hip-hop and forgot all
about electronic music in favour of more guitar-oriented
stuff.

i've dug out P.J. Harvey's excellent 'stories from the city,
stories from the sea', been listening to Travis (i don't
care what any elitist bastards say - they still make good
tunes, plus it's very summery music), and of course
Radiohead.

wow, i don;t feel so alone now...i listen to a lot of what i
used to listen too, is this it now...?
is the search over for a new type of music? i was so "wow,
this is the holy grail what i have been searching for all my
life!" when i found electronica....and like you said....it's
kinda stopped now...
are we forever searching for albums now that won't quite be
as good as the ones we have played to death....sorry to
depress anyone...i know i am depressing myself

Actually my feeling towards electronic music changed totally
when I started making it myself...I remember listening to
drill tracks thinking fucking hell how did they do
that...once I realised how easy it is I got bored with
drill...I am more into melody now, and I think the diversity
of the sounds that can be produced electronically lends
itself perfectly.

i get you.....stories form the sity is so quality!!! i love
that woman....

tel lyou what, you get so much good music and play the
albums to death that you end up doing a full circle of your
collection...i think i must be doing another loop
then....the progression is starting again....
maybe everytime you go through the loop you hear the stuff
you first started to listen to differently, and again the
next time you go through the loop...only the loop gets
bigger everytime you go through the loop!....AWESOME...
ANYBODY WITH ME ON THIS?

draft exceeded my expectations.. but ill also say that
electronic isnt going to finish as such because it has a lot
of potential as an instrument

yeah, agreed! there are times when i get so utterly bored of
my CD collection (and i must have at least a 1,000 or so CDs
in total) that i can't help but rush out to a few local
record stores and pick up something i've read favourable
reviews of, have been recommended by someone else, or
otherwise been meaning to get for ages

that's sort of how i discovered things like Four Tet, or
Dead Can Dance for example - i heard 'into the labyrinth' a
long time ago on casette -and at the time hated it, but once
i heard, 'the host of seraphim' on the Baraka soundtrack, i
fell in love with them! I've got everything they've ever put
out now.

same with The Third Eye Foundation - i didn't get 'ghost' at
all when i first heard it - too dissonant and noisy, i
thought - but i absolutely love all TEF stuff now!

if you wanna try something really different than what you're
used to, i highly recommend 'this mess we've made' by Matt
Elliot (formerly TEF) - very victorian, sort of mid 19-th
century sounding stuff - awfully melancholy and downright
beautiful! also along similar lines, anything by Yann
Tiersen (he did the soundtrack to 'Amelie'), which Matt
Elliot (under his TEF moniker) actually remixed a bit back.

no, no....we are trying to explain how things progress and
end up doing a full revolution/circle when collections of
music are made, and how they progress to other music, then,
when you get stuck (like i am now) you start to listen to
stuff you bought before and so another revolution, but it
gets bigger every time....the music just gets so jumbled up
and on and on....

When you think about it and go back to the formative music
you listened to in the past you can often find that the
avenue off that sound is not the only avenue you could have
taken, so it is often going right back to what sparked your
interest in the first place and begin again.

i think that there is an inherently regressive tendency in
all humans, whether we acknowledge it or not - all of us
subconsicously yearn for a simpler time when the world
didn't weigh so heavily on our shoulders - ie. early
childhood, which for most of us was free of worry, and is
usually associated with a sense of great comfort - a time
when everything seemed so simple & wonderful and nearly
everything could captivate your imagination.

even sleeping is sort of akin to returning to the womb -
most of us curl up in a fetal position when we nod off.

so it would only make sense that eventually one would be
enclined to return to the sort of music which perpetuated
the process of broadening one's musical horizons in the
first place - that's not to say that we may want to dalve as
far back as the time when we all thought michael jackson was
the shit, but ...
