So I'm wanting an instrument that doesn't require electricity so I can play it during electrical storms, blackouts and the fall of civilization we're all expecting so soon.
Requirements - no electricity, not too noisy, doesn't need expensive strings or reeds. Solution? The noble flute. Also, it's versatile - you can use it for ambient, jazz, classical and rock (Jethro Tull OMG!)
I originally wanted a trumpet but they're just too fuckin loud! I'd have to rent a rehearsal space somewhere just to practice. Mute? Don't make me laugh.
So whaddya think? Can you think of an instrument that better meets my requirements?

Yo, a flute...thats gangsta my man...erm, not my type of thing...you should become a human beat box...it is very cheap and unless your mouth falls off you will always be able to practise.

You know, if you can't get your hands on a flute, recorders are quite cheap. They're simple poor men's flutes, and they cost something like 5 bucks a piece where i'm at.
I have a lot of accoustic instruments myself. I pride myself in my xylophone, african thumb drum, african thumb piano, guitars, violin and bamboo recorder. My rainstick is always fun too.

Aw shit I played a recorder in my high school music class - I hate the sound of the goddamned things. They're like a puppy whining and you want to strangle it.
A flute at least has some texture and body to the sound.
Your instrument collection sounds fun. I have no idea what a thumb drum is.

yeah, i'd rather have a flute too. *laughs* i don't use the recorder that much... i think i've only used it in a couple of songs, and usually i screw around with the noise so you can't recognize it.
I'm fairly proud of my instrument collection, mainly because it's all stuff i've worked hard for, and it gives me plenty of outlets for my ideas.
A thumb drum actually has an African name (i forget, someone remind me if you know) but it's a hollowed out-gourd, still intact, while a hole carved in a metal prongs that you pluck. Quite nice. The drum was obviously made professionally (there's a serial number) but the piano was handmade in South Africa. It's real quiet, and the primitive metals are starting to become frayed.

flutes are really hard to play how about a harmonica? if you're going to go all out and master the whole reed/woodwind/compleximacated genre, get a fucking saxophone. they also serve as a fair blunt instrument, if you need one quick

Yeah, real wind instruments are pricey... I have a student model clarinet I got when I was a kid - it wasn't cheap then and it's probably worth something now. Maybe I can trade it in... (I'd play the thing but again I can't stand the sound of it)
What I might do is call around a couple of flute teachers and see if they have any leads on used instruments - like some rich kid got bored of his flute and got his 'rents to get him a grand piano or a kilo of gold plated cocaine instead. I'll need a few lessons at first to get some technique down anyhow.

I don't believe that flutes are hard to play. Why you just put your lips together... and blow.
I had a harmonica when I was a kid. It was fun. I used to have a suitcase full of toy instruments - melodicas, harmonicas (one shaped like a banana!), kazoos, Jew's harp, pennywhistles, etc etc. Wish I still had it! My Bontempi melodica was ace.

come to think of it, i have a Marine Band harmonica somewhere at my house.... now if i can just remember where i put the damn thing....
i'd KILL for a saxophone, but they're mad expensive. plus there's a lot of shit to worry about, like reeds and cleaning, etc. A tenor sax would be nice....

i have a junky little flute that i accidentally stole from my middle school. in band, we were trying out new intruments for some bizarre unit we had, and i was sick the day we picked instruments, so when i came back the next day, the teacher handed me a flute and said, "it's all we've got left." oh well, i thought to myself, didn't think much of it. i just realized i still had the thing a few months ago actually. they probably forgot about it, it has been over four years now.
anyhow, judging from my experience with woodwinds, i would go for a clarinet, much more interesting tone in my opinion. or a horn -- the softest instrument in a brass quartet yet the loudest in a woodwind quintet. i am actually hoping to buy my own in the next three weeks. maybe i will try and sell this flute. (i suppose i will return it though, i guess the music department hasn't done me wrong.)

you cant go wrong with traditional and ethnic instruments what about a dulcimer acoustic and varied or a xylaphone or a melodica more fun than a flute and you get just as dizzy at the end of a long solo :)

Hey yeah, melodica is cool - I wouldn't have to get any lessons since I already know keyboard - and it'd be a good workout for my right hand. My left is a lot more agile thanks to years of guitar playing.
I think mylittlesister was into getting a melodica at one point... I seem to remember discussing it with him...
