i have always wanted to like NIN but been a haterr.
last night howeverr i was rreally tirred and i put Pretty
Hate Machine on and i just got lost in it. i paid less
attention the lyrrics and just listened in the calm of my
tirredness. grreat album.
i have to say i'm still not so keen on Trents voice, but so
what.

it never helps.

PHM is my favourite album probably.

(except on some of Still's acoustic track versions when his
voice goes nasal)

Admittedly whiny...but atleast the suject matter of the
whining is not so infuriatingly teen-angsty.

No offence...to each his own...I was just putting across my

I've always been a big NIN fan but i agree, Trent's
lyrics/vocals are a bit lacking sometimes.

He has been extremely influential/innovative though. just
look at all the copy-cats. they're still showing up.

also, the soundtrack he produced for Natural Born
Killers
is one of my favorites.

I have never actually pursued nine inch nails, but have
secretly liked him/them for some time. My friend let me
borrow PHM about a year ago but never listened to it much.
A few weeks ago I put it in again and found it riveting,
exciting, beautiful, angst-ridden... yummy! I even like his
voice most of the time. I am a sucker for early 90s/late
80's synthpop with all of its shimmering synths and cheesy
drum machines, and I am also a closet industrial fan, so
Trent's mix of the two was the perfect thing for me. Great
album.

ugh, i listene dot phm today and its loaded with cheesiness
and fluff. its VERY dated and a lot of the songs i never
liked but there are some great tracks but i think its by the
far the worst\least good nin album. down in it is godawful,
i hate when he raps.

All That Could Have Been is by far the worst NIN release.
Trent's voice has gone through a downward spiral on this
album. really sad you know? because it's only going to get
worse.

No one's mentioned The Fragile yet. an incredible album when
you leave out Starfuckers

aaand most of the lyrics

really bad rhymes

on the song "That's What I Get" from Pretty Hate
Machine...anyone notice his over-pronunciation of the line
"get" in the chorus? he kind of goes: "That's what I
get-ah...That's what I get-aaah"

really funny, great NIN moment

I'm glad english isn't my first language... i think
otherwise trent's lyrics might have really annoyed me.
But now there's always some distance... and it helps me to
focus more on the music (which often is amazing with nin). I
don't mind his voice. It's not amazing, but it gets the job
done.

admit it anus! you're secretly hoping that one day you'll be
allowed backstage at a NIN concert where trent reznor will
proceed to fuck you like an animal!

but filth aside, 'pretty hate machine' is pretty lame
compared to 'the downward spiral' which is a work of pure

on that album - he hasn't been able to top it since, as far
as i'm concerned.

the only song i like is something i can never have

and i think trent's voice is terrible on still because he
recorded most of the songs right after the fragility tour,
which was not very smart in my opinion - but i guess it
makes it RAW

still is awesome, way better than aatchb, still is one of
the best nin releases. I cant decide if i like downward
spiral or the fragile better. their are some weak points on
the fragile, he tries to rap again on one or two tracks and
i dont like starfuckers, its just annoying. the instrumental
tracks are superb however.

what about broken and fixed, what do you think about those?
i think broken is good but theres some weak stuff on it too
and i havent heard fixed yet(the only nin that i havent

I love nine inch nails but I've been following him for a
long time and I'm getting kinda sick of his hyping the next
album years before he puts it out.

His lyrics are kinda childish at times, but it should be
noted that some of his 'cliches' were not cliches when he
wrote them.

downward spiral was his best album, and i don't think he'll
ever top it, but the fragile was quite good.

Prick, his mentor and previously fellow-nothing-artist, far
surpasses him, I've decided.

no, aatchb is definately not the best tracks on still, the
last 2 tracks are freaking phenomenal, especially the last
one, my god thats good.

after reading that nin dissertation, (sickamongthepure.net),
i listened to downward spiral again and its even better now,
i listened to the fragile and i like it less than before,
now i like the downward spiral best, its amazing. the
themes and way everything works together in excellent. the
lyrics are very good on most of his albums i dont understand
the complaints about them. the fragile has a lot of not so
good tracks (cough...starfuckers...cough...and alot of
tracks on disc2) the instrumental tracks on the fragile are
all top notch and i love the fragile but it doesnt seem to
hold together as well as an album as the downward spiral.

Since reading that article, and based on my adoration for
Closer (from radio play and mp3), and based on my love for
Pretty Hate Machine, and from the suggestion from a friend
*gasp*, I finally went and bought TDS. :*)
It's excellent, as expected. Great music and thoughtful
lyrics.. and best of all, I love the narrative, or thematic
quality the article discussed more in depth. Really added a
new dimension to the experience. I've always liked concept
albums, and this one easily fits into the category.

For all the people that like the spiral best your problebly
going to like the new CD. The fragile wasnt just Trent, it
was made by like a million different people (Dr.Dre even
worked on one song),

From everything I gathered, the new cd is going to be a loud
commercial success mostly produced by trent, that is going
to be backed up with a smaller venue tour.

All the albums are gold, but the remix albums are kind of
stinky (minus the new one)

If you want to here some good tunes check out ohGr. Its
fucking amazing. Ah and KICK IT by nitzer ebb is a cool song
: )

i like the fragile more than TDS but i played TDS out.. plus
i'm all about musical growth and the fragile just kills TDS,
which is quite a feat considering how amazing TDS was for
the time. i agree that trent's lyrics can be very childish,
not thematically but on a child level of thought (juvenile)
and technique (some really clumsy rhymes, images, and
metaphors).

you really think prick is all that? i haven't listened to
the first album in years now but when i got it i was really
disappointed and i don't consider him anywhere near as
musically gifted as trent.

MoG: i agree w/ you on the closing 2 tracks of still, they
are masterpieces. but i do think AATCHB is the best "song"
(singable; has lyrics) trent's ever written, up there with
"hurt", "something i can never have", "wish", etc. AATCHB is
just so well-written lyrically. it shows major progress in
song structure: restraint, un-forced rhymes, less
strict/conventional formatting (not verse/chorus/verse),
etc.

what a weird thing to say. while the fragile is definitely
trent's most collaborative album, it's hardly the work of "a
million different people". dre mixed down one song ("even
deeper") to 16 tracks from the original 64. steve albini
engineered a little bit, but not the whole album (maybe a
couple tracks). but unlike past albums, some of the songs
were co-written, notably with danny lohner (a musical
mastermind in his own right), charlie clouser, and keith
hillebrandt. these are just a few songs on a double album
that spans i believe 27 tracks, and some of the co-writing
was just programming and generally tweaking work trent had
already done. so even though there were slightly more
personnel than on TDS it wasn't much of a departure; it was
still very much trent's baby.

you don't like the remix albums?! for a puppy fan i figured
you'd at least like Fixed and March of the Pigs...

i don't think it's safe any more to hypothesize on what the
new album will sound like.. everything trent said about the
next album is really dated now; he could've totally changed
gears (and from the weird design of the new nin.com page it
doesn't lend itself to the violent synth music description
he once ascribed to it).

all right i relistened to this 'and all that could have been
song,' and i think i like it less when i listen more
critically. lyrically especially...i like the line 'ice is
starting to form, i'm locked inside yadda yadda.' but i'm
definitely not feeling the chorus at all! none of it.

I agree with whoever said Kevin McMahon, aka Prick is better
than Trent. No question. Well, as far as songwriting and
lyric writing go. Trent has him on the technological aspects
of music making, but Kevin's pretty impressive at that as
well. The Wreckard, Prick's second album was written and
recorded entirely by him... here's what he has to say: Could
you describe the recording process for The Wreckard?

That's been experimental. I record on four audio tracks and
also use MIDI. I don't use any computers. I work with
four-track digital audio. I just limit myself to those
confines. Everything produced by myself was on four tracks.
As far as processing, I used an AKAI 3000 sampler and then
put it into digital audio and then ran it through some amps.
I don't have any computerized processing stuff or a mixer.
It's analog on the fly.

Are you anti-digital?

No. I started developing a style on a limited framework. I'm
not trying to be a purist. It leant itself to being a more
bonsai type of situation, figuring out how to do it without
so much aid.
-------
Now compare the Wreckard to the fragile... where Trent had a
huge studio, 64 tracks, lots of helpers... and Wreckard's a
better album. That you may not agree with me on, but you
have to admit it sounds good, and is even more impressive
considering the recording technique.

I have the unfair advantage in having heard lucky pierre
material... maybe the two prick albums don't automatically
make someone see that he's a better songwriter than trent...
but just trust me... kevin's incapable of writing a bad
song. catchy hooks come out of him like a bodily function.
not to say songwriting is all about catchy hooks.

actually, i have to say i have heard the wreckard, and i
thought it sucked besides the third song. it was messy,
disjoint, and i disagree with your statement that kevin's
incapable of writing a bad song, because i thought that
there were plenty on the wreckard.

but as they say, opinions are like assholes.

for once i agree w/ you.. wasn't impressed w/ the wreckard
either, but i need to give it another listen since so many
people on that "other" board like it. don't think the stuff
vacant posted qualifies as besting trent either, lots of
people restrict themselves to certain tools or instruments
and it doesn't make their music necessarily better or more
interesting.
