I posted this over at here
For a while i believed that there was a corrilation between IDM and Lucid Dreaming. I have noticed that a number of IDM artists and fans of the music genre have many experiences in LD.
I was wondering if people on this board would be interested in doing this experiment. Simpily enough all you have to do is download some mp3s from specific artists and go to sleep at different volume levels.
Then post results here. Would anyone be interested?

Hey there bro! This does sound like a good idea. I have tried similar things but i usually listen to classical music while i fall asleep. I did sample a bOc CD while falling asleep not to long ago but i really didn't pay attention to it's effects on lucidity.

I usually fall asleep to ambient music like Brian Eno or SAW2. I've also wondered if music triggers LD, but I haven't found any patterns yet.

My experiences.
Falling asleep requires the brain to completely disengage itself from reality.
This is hard to do when there is
1) background noise to distract the mind, and to keep the mind in a realistic state.
2) the mind is thinking about current events (replaying the day in your head while trying to fall asleep) or thinking about a decision you recently made; whatever is on your mind
I think music can not nec. help you fall asleep, but help you disengage yourself from reality and take your mind off things (read: idle) to finally fall asleep.
Listening to music that is heavily complex may require too much of the brain's utilization to make it easy to fall asleep.
Listening to slower music that is known to be able to sooth the mind, and slow down your heart rate (BPM) is a very useful tool for falling asleep.
I personally feel that while IDM (and sometimes, drugs) helps a person learn more about themselves, and thus digging deeper into the hole; learning about lucid dreaming, and experimentations, it does not have a direct effect on the user lucid dreaming.
I think that the music can definetely get someone into trying to LD, as well as learning more about it.
IDM, in my opinion, has a great advantage on the understanding and goal to attain a LD.
I do, however, feel that IDM does not have a direct relationship to attaining a lucid dream.
Although the usage of techniques to LD (i.e., remembering things in real life, or checking the time) helps to realize that you are dreaming, music may be able to do the same thing.
I sometimes hear background music in my dreams, but they have yet to help me attain a LD based soly on the music.
Keep in mind that the brain shuts off when dreaming/sleeping, so you really don't hear much.
...to be continued.

Do you any of you think that sound frequencies can effect brain patterns and thus effect the brains capaibilities during LD or REM and such?
I do know that there are certain frequencies that are used for crowd control that make people feel sick or actually get sick. So couldn't it be said that there are frequencies and/or different kinds of sounds that will affect you and dreaming?

I could write a 10page paper on that, virgin, but i'll save it for a few quick sentences.
These "crowd control" sounds are uuber low frequencies.
Resonance (a key RDJ himself adores) is one of the most powerful natural forces.
It occurs by standing waves; i.e., when the wavelength of a wave/frequency is refracted/reflected in perfect alignment with itself on the reflected side.
If i have two walls that are approximetely 50ft appart, and send a strong 20Hz wave into them, the waves will reflect off one wall and be in perfect sync with the oncoming waves.
This 'standing wave' creates more energy (waveform, pressure) and thus creates a louder dB (units of measurement in this instance..) gain.
The same is true of all things. Everything has a resonate frequency.
The ideal resonate of the human skull is beleived to be ~ 400Hz.
Play a 400Hz note loud enough, and with the resonating notes in your skull, you may develop quite a nice headache :)
The human heart, and brain also have resonate frequencies.
Now, things like your bowol movements can also be manipulated.
If you play a note (read: brownie note) say 12Hz or lower, at approximetely 120dBs are higher, then you will most likely shit yourself or puke.
This is due to the resonance of the bowels, and that great of pressure will easily cause a bodily function. :)
Now these ultra low frequencies are Very hard to produce at those levels.
They can also be used as weapons or crowd control (we will probably see it in a few years time).
If you take a jet engine, and attack a very long (length + surface area attunes to the resonate frequency/tuned freq. of the jet engine); you can say, tune a jet engine at 20Hz in an enclosure cabin.
You can then aim this highly directive and very powerful waveform at say, a concrete building, and with that great of pressure you can shake it to pieces. :D
Ultra low frequencies also "stun" the human. A tiger, when growls, sometimes spits out 7Hz waves that "stun" it's prey, m

(cont.) momentarily. The same is true for a human.
This is where crowd control is coming in.
I do beleive that this type of approach to LD is off on a tangent and would only cause disruptions in the LD process.
I could be wrong, everyone is different.

Thank you for that absolutely useless post!
Now back on track. Why don't we go with weatheredstoner's choice SAW2 because we all probably have access to it. That would probably be easier to attain than say Pole - 45/45.
So for the next couple of days. Starting tonight listen to SAW2 before falling asleep and see if this particular album has any differing affects on your dreams.

But then again, certain notes, even though you really don't hear when you are sleeping/dreaming, certain notes may be able to identify a reaction in the brain that could allow the user to realize the dream state.
Hmm I'll do some more thinking on it later and post some example experiments; maybe whip up some sine notes as well.

So what are some people's tips for lucid dreaming? Like, what do you do, personally to help yourself lucid dream?
Things i do: 1. think about lucid dreaming often while awake. For example, my cell phone has the text greeting "Asleep? Dead?" so every time i look at my phone i see that message and think about lucid dreaming.
2. I try to recognize situations that only happen when i am dreaming. for me thats, being unable to accelerate when i run, being back in high-school and forgetting locker combo and what class i'm supposed to go to. Or being at school and not wearing pants, only an over-sized t-shirt. (happens all the time in my dreams)
3. Frequently try to materialize objects in my hands. When i'm awake (obviously) this does not work. In my dreams, this does work.
Any other good ideas? I like the checking digital clocks idea and turning lights on and off though that has not worked for me. i.e. lights still work in my dreams.

also: as a follow up,
Once you are lucid dreaming, do you ever have trouble staying lucid? for me, when i am lucid dreaming, i almost have to continuously remember not to wake up. It's like trying to keep a muscle flexed. and it's quite frustrating if do wake up.

ahh for example, after thinking about lucid dreaming yesterday i had a ludid dream:
Again i was in my old high school. i had a little card that was supposed to tell me what locker was mine and what the combo was. the card was all old though and i could only make out the locker number "D 89" i went the locker but the combo written on the card just looked like right 1 left 1 right 1 which i knew didn't work. I was then explaining to my mom (i'm not sure why she was there) that i didn't know the combo and i wasn't sure which class i should go to when i realized that this kind of shit only happens in my dreams.
i said to my mom, "wait, i think i'm dreaming. lets see, check this out." and i jumped up and floated my self up to the ceiling. i then did some mind control shit on a girl i used to have a thing for. but then i started thinking about not waking up which woke me up.
that part sucked.

"Once you are lucid dreaming, do you ever have trouble staying lucid?"
It can be tricky but I find it that it helps to relax some. I don't mean fully relax because you might get swept away in the dream but getting over excited or overexhertion will cause you to wake up.
Also to comment on your dream. Written things are completely useless. Kinda like lightswitches. What if you would have believed that it would have worked..... what would have been inside?

I am not sure how this will go. The last two nights didn't work out as planned. I have nothing to report currently.
Although I have sampled some albums that would be great for this topic.
Albums of recommendation (Minimal) ---------------------------------- mika vainio + carsten nicolai - CAD SOFTWARE. This album is so so minimal I could easy get lost in the warm nothingness and slow patterns. Appears to be a nice relaxing album. Not the kind of album if you don't want to relax.
snd - makesnd cassette This album is also minimal. I love the sounds that they produced and it is a great album IMO. I love hearing this album when i wake up. Another great one to listen to while thinking
Monolake - (any album will do) I also really love the sounds here. And as I would most likely recommend "interstate". I just started listening to "hong Kong" which i find good as well but i would like to listen to more of there music before giving a halfarsed description.

I've seen waking life and it's theories on light switches and written things in dreams. I think this may be true for some people but not necessarily with everyone. In my dream, i could see the locker number, it was "D89" i just didn't try the combo 1/1/1 because i was thinking that it couldn't possibly be the right combo. next time i have this dream (as it is a recurring one) i am gonna try the combo, then i'll post what was in the locker if it works.
the light thing is true for me though. in fact, i don't recall ever even seeing light switches in my dreams to even try to see if they work.

every time i realize i'm dreaming i wake up in a matter of seconds.
also i kind of like the unpredictability of my dreams, like running along a wooden walkway above a redwood forest shooting bad guys with laser guns (maybe i play too many games) and thinking it's completely real, only to find the treasure chest at the end, open it, and wake up.
whenever i lucid dream it's always something stupid like being at work, or making a sandwich (not that it can get any better than eating a sandwich).
