Reason vs Fruity Loops

Hey...I've been working with Reason for about a year now.
I find it incredibly easy to use, but my sound seems to fit
the early 90's era, and I haven't been able to find any
techniques to deliver any sound comparable to drill n'bass,
glitch, or "autechreish" stuff.

I'm not too familiar with Fruity Loops, but I understand
that it's quite popular here at xltronic. What benefits can
Fruity Loops provide that are absent within Reason? How is
the learning curve compared to Reason?

Thank you my music gurus.

It is easy to do drill stuff with Reason :D

but it's easier to do it with floops, once you start to get
a hang on floops.

It's possible to create autechreish stuff within reason it's
way to long winded to explain here, Just use things for what
they are not supposed to be used for.

The new fruity loops is very easy to get quick results but
loop based prodution does my head in.

Do you have recycle and sound forge?

Yeah, I find the loopiness awkward after having worked with
straight sequencers where there's one track per tone. But
I'm getting used to it - it's worth it to be able to use
DxIs and VSTs and Buzz generators all in the same project.

I'm hoping that as it evolves they will add more traditional
sequencer-based authoring options, like better cut and paste
in the piano roll.

Reason 2.5 goes much further than other versions of Reason
in producing half decent electronic sounding stuff. You can
get some great sounds with the Scream and the Spider CV
devices.

both are good. both are used by people whom i think are
really great at music. both are quite different. i use
fruity loops more, but reason is good to, and i like it.

i dont see a reason in favoring one over the other. try em
both, find out which one works better for you.

tell me, what does the spider splitter merger do? I've added
this device but there was no difference in sound?
And fooled myself by thinking that the vocoder was a device
to mess about with vocals :\
I was anxious to get that proper robot sound as on daft punk
and air's electronic performers. Damn I was disappointed,
but the scream device made up for all that.

hey :
fruity loops is just a tracker , maybe sounds and modeling
od it is good, but it is good in real time - floops is shit
when comes to plain songs..
reason is veery big so it takes time to understand all it's
possibilities.
i'm using reason from 1 year now, and i think thjat when
comes to modelling hole song there is nothing better

could be but it's too complicated to me, I'll stick with
reason where when I turn this button, a sound changes etc.
I like the more inuitive stuff as I come from a background
of using trackers, i'm already proud I can get sounds out of
reason, something I've never been able to do with cubase.
Maybe the 5 inch thick manual put me off, dunno.

and btw, I'm still clueless on how to make patterns in
reason. What I want to do is make different patterns and
have them follow up in whatever order I assign them to, but
so far no result. With trackers, you just had a simple list
that you could edit, so it was like 1,1,2,3,4,1,1 etc.

there is yellow "link " in control pannel near all rack's
just plain some patterns in rack ( for example - redrum )
and then at control pannel hint yellow "link " ( dont
remember the name )
you will get yellow pannel when you can plain this pattern (
of course you must first asaign that you are oppering in
redum track ) by choosing . like a1 , a2 , b3 , b4 , b5 ,

simple hehehehehe

Yep...I've got Sound Forge, WaveLab Cubase, Recycle, and
Rebirth (Hardly ever use anything but Sound Forge and
WaveLab).

I here what you're saying - I try to use the program in a
way that it's not meant to be used. I'm having a little
success with Recycle for some crazy ass drum loops.

offline X-tomatic from ze war room on 2003-06-24 14:15 [#00755391]

I wasn't joking!
well all I need to know is how to make the patterns
follow-up(patterns change) to create a complete song. As in,
I would have a few patterns for the chorus, a few for the
intro, etc. , and then put them all in order. So basically
to make pattern A1 be followed by pattern A2 etc. I should
be real easy but somehow I can't figure it out. :\

Cubase is a pain in my ass. I've been sampling my own
sounds to try to rid that "Reasonish" sound that goes with
the territory. The granular synth is pretty kick ass too.

I don't suppose Reason does random beats eh? ;)

Dude....just play around with it for awhile and you'll
figure it out. Trial and error (or you could just read the
manual).

OMG!!! I think I've found the problem with my sound....I'm
too goddam lazy.

I read the manual, but the topic that addresses the issue is
about 3 lines long, I tried that, it didn't work like the
manual siad it should, and it gave no further explanation, I
guess it's supposedly so easy it isn't worth spending any
attention on in the manual. :S

You have to make sure that you hit the "run" button on the
Redrum. Do you want to copy a drum loop to the sequencer?

There is a small button above the "Run" button as well.
Make sure that mofo is set properly. When all else fails
check the volume ;).

The Redrum is bar far the best part of Reason.....so many
kits......must have more kits.........

differ in being a pain in the ass though.

Pattens are pretty straight forward.

Say you've made 2 drum pattens (A1 + A2)

Go to Arrange Mode (click on the far left button on the
sequencer)

Click on the Patten Lane (the yellow button to the right of
the Arrang Mode button)

The pattewn lane should appear in the main sequencer
window.

Use the pencil to draw in patten A1. Change patten to A2 by
clicking on the little pull down icon in the left of the
patten window.

Alternatively, do as above but also click the Show
Controller Lane (first blue button) then the Controllers
button (the blue one next to it) There's a long list of
control functions. Go right to the bottom and select
'Selected Patten'. A blue channel appears under the yellow
one. Draw with the pencil the patten in the blue channel.
Easy peasy.

get SL from digitalvillage.co.uk Its by far the cheapest
i've seen it. The difference between SL and SX is so minimal
its almost pathetic, and DEFINATELY not worth the 200-250
quid price gap. Its just things like SL can only put 8
effects onto one sound, whereas SX is 12. Stupid things like
that. SX can mix in 5.1 surround sound, SL cant... I have SL
and Halion package deal.

The SX also has the tape saturation plugin, which sounds
like a nice idea though I haven't tried it yet.

Unfortunately SX doesn't get on well with my MAudio card so
I don't use it much. :-( If I could make it work properly
I'd buy a copy immediately (SL probably). It's a very nice
app. Not nice enough to have to buy new hardware though.

my advice is to stick with reason. it is much better, the
sequencer is superb ( i wish i could get it to trigger
external midi). the sounds from reason may need a little
alterations out of reason before mix down, but all songs
which you publish should be mastered. fruityloops harks back
to the bad old days of trackers and loops and arggh dont get
me started. the ts404 or whatever it is sucks big time, only
advantage is vst, but hey solo reason channels record to
wave, master with vst in cubase, or hell even use rewire to
play reason via cubase(and vst). although i tend not to do
this since my cubase only goes upto 250bpm and some of my
reason stuff si at over 600:)

i agree. I tried to download cubase so i wouldnt have to
cough up dollar, but i got like, 5 different copies, and
they either didnt work, had shit loads of bugs, or didnt
have all the features on them. I eventually coughed up, and
ive had no problems at all with it, and its smelly dongle.
There is a hell of a lot to learn though, im on like, page
100 of 790 in the manual!! I have 2 1/2 months off until i
start my second university degree though.

What kind of sound card do you have? I have this Maudio
24/96 audiophile that I am slowly realizing is a piece of
crap. It's great for playback but the asio / wdm
functionality causes too many pops and clicks when you use
it with a serious audio app. I have this problem in Cakewalk
too.

I gotta get something better!

but are there libraries of sounds that come with cubase or

I use Buzz...
Mainly because I know it, and I haven't got a very good
puter which I assume Reason (when using tons of effects and
stuff) needs... Also Buzz is free, so I don't have to pirate
it like I would if I would use some expensive software (I'm
