If US government does more things to enrage the rest of the
world than this is good because eventually rest of the world
will not tolerate them any longer and strike them down

The rewriting of history for propaganda and bias is as old
as history

"If some tinhorn terrorist wants me, tell him to come
and get me," he says. "I'll be at home. Waiting for the
bastard." "But Mr President ..." stammers his Secret Service
chief. "Try 'Commander-in-Chief',"

wtf!?

this is a joke right?... right?

George Orwell's 1984 looks more and more like a collection
of prophecies than fiction.

I've even heard recordings of bush saying stuff like "We are
at war to keep the peace"... Newspeak in it's purest form?

I read it again recently and some of it is very relavent,
some not so... the thing is in the book it's against
people's will but now lots of people seem happy to be
decieved, it makes things easier for them to deal with.

I don't think it is like that in the book.

there are only a few people who actually KNOW that they are
being toyed with. the rest just don't know and really don't
care, exactly because it makes things easier for them to
deal with.

Yeah, Noam Chomsky have spoken about this sometimes - saying
that the situation is even more totalitarian because through
carefully played out propaganda moves the different
administrations have successfully lured the media and people
into self-cenorship. People voicing decent will get booo'ed
out - I've heard this with my own ears in a speech made in
an american college by a highly respected war correpondent -
throughout his speech nearly all the students shouted stuff
like "shut the fuck up!" and "go home". He didn't even talk
about sensitive things, but he kept on going. Some of the
teachers actually feared for his safety and sort of told him
to leave after about 30 minutes.
And america is supposed to promote free speech and all that
bullshit? Scary.

Yep, there's evidence that the romans did it. Neo-classical
architecture (think Ivy league universities) based on
supposedly Roman traditional design was actually Turkish
architecture... romans actually changed mosaics when they
invaded to depict things differently...

For some reason it made me think of this Deep Thought:

He was a cowboy, mister, and he loved the land. He loved
it so much he made a woman out of dirt and married her. But
when he kissed her, she disintegrated. Later, at the
funeral, when the preacher said, "Dust to dust," some people
laughed, and the cowboy shot them. At his hanging, he told
the others, "I'll be waiting for you in heaven--with a
gun."

The Romans and Egyptians also had the practice of "damnatio
memoriae" as it is called - undesirables would be erased
from statuary and portraiture. Probably every culture has
done this to some extent - like when the Americans tore down
that Saddam statue.

This is from this weeks Schnews...

"Last week a poll revealed that a third of Americans believe
that weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq,
while 22 per cent reckon Iraq actually used them! Even
before the war, half of those polled said the Iraq regime
was responsible for September 11th. But no one's found any
weapons of mass destruction let alone used them (well apart
from the Americans and British) and no Iraqis were on the
planes that hit the twin towers. So how could people be so
misinformed?...

As Noam Chomsky put it 'The bewildered herd is a problem.
We've got to prevent their rage and trampling. We've got to
distract them. They should be watching the Superbowl or
sitcoms or violent movies. Every once in a while you call on
them to chant meaningless slogans like 'Support our
troops.' You've got to keep them pretty scared, because
unless they're properly scared and frightened of all kinds
of devils that are going to destroy them from outside or
inside or somewhere, they may start to think, which is very
dangerous, because they're not competent to think. Therefore
it's important to distract them and marginalize them.'"

News you won't hear on TV

"Your enemy is not truly defeated until you have erased all
trace of them. Slaughter their women and children, burn down
their cities, kill all that knew or traded with them. Only
when the memory of them is destroyed are they truly
defeated..." :)

I can't believe i pitch in for the $49.99/month our digital
cable costs here.

The roomates want it, but I could give a shit. Aside from a
football game here and there, christ, $50 a month for that
shit! no way!

I think it goes beyond just watching TV. News management of
the type we're seeing now is pernicious. Even if you don't
watch TV or read newspapers millions of others are and
forming their opinions based on propaganda and lies. It
leads to scenarios like wars (Iraq?) being waged on
falsehoods. Dangerous ground we're treading.

Although, has it ever been any different? S'pose not really.

Hey Ceri JC. Where did you read that? Curious.
