The term "IDM"

I know people dislike the expression.
Many say its not "danceable" or "music" some even argue its
"intelligence".
I say the term is not incorrect but rather dated,a few years
ago the whole term fitted perfectly like Surfing On Sine
Waves. It was intelligent, dancable and 'twas music.
I say keep the term, like people have kept the term "Rock".It
would never change names because of its history, thats what
music is built upon, its own history.Athough it can evolve
sub-genres (but thats a whole different subject ).

So by changing the term "IDM" we discard the genre's history
which brought you here.
But then again this genres about evolving isn't it?

If I'm forced to use a name, I prefer braindance, but I
usually don't see music as rock or techno or trance or
braindance or whatever, it's just music to me.

...or we can use the name idm while forgetting what it
stands for.

it's strange because "IDM" is music you cant label, so in a
way it doesnt make sense to label it, braindance is more
accurate or even just electronica or electronics

someone on here wrote an interesting essay about what "IDM"
is and why the label though pretentious does make a little
bit of sense

i like it myself.. it's a thousand times better than any
other suggestion ive ever heard anyone else make.

if you are going to start subcategorising techno music then
why not use the term IDM?

people who get all bent out of shape about using 'IDM' get
on my nerves..

hip hop producers usually aren't manually juggling loops
back and fourth on turntables these days.. so they aren't
really 'hip hopping' anymore.. but people don't get upset
about that label..

pfft..

good HIP point HOP HOP.. on a related note, live dj's
backing emcees on stage are a joke. play the 12"
instrumental cut, fade to the next one. repeat. exceptions:
nu-mark & cut chemist, chief xcel, and _______ (fill in the
blank!)

my only problem is the 'intelligent' part... implying, not
so subtly, that other forms of music are un-intelligent. a
pompous condescending viewpoint that a lot of people in the
more "underground" genres of music seem to take... and one
which puts a sour taste in my mouth.

I know it’s all been said a bzillion times, and, not
that I even that I care much at all about the name, but, it
reflects some things that I really dislike about the whole
scene in general.

I get more annoyed that there are so many threads discussing
this name... who really cares what music is called... I love
this music, yet if it was labeled by the music industry or
something as shit, I wouldn't care...

I would like to answer your question directly, but
considering your past reactions I feel that to do so would

i think it's far more anal to get bent out of shape with
what people call it. what are you so insecure about? why do
you CARE? just be glad people are feeling it, that's all
that matters. be a nerd about star wars or math, leave music
to listening and appreciating.

This genre will always be commonly known as IDM,its just a
name, who cares what it stands for?Its about the music.
And after typing that,I think to myself..."Why did I even
create this topic?"

umm, correct me if i am wrong, actually don't correct me,
but when i talk about music and describe it to somebody as
IDM, i am only saying it so the person has a point of
reference, i am not using it because i totally believe in it
being "Intelligent Dance Music", it doesn't make me some
wanna-be intellectual hanging around thinking i am cool. i
amusing this term like i use the word "kiss my ass" to let
someone know i don't like em, just like i use the term "what
the fuck?" to verbalize my confusion.....so don't fuckin get
all smartassy to someone who says IDM, and flame em forever,
its a frikkin word,

just out of curriosity; if it was referred to as
'irritating dance music', or 'uninspired dance music', or
'rediculous dance music', ect... would all of you who say
"who cares about a name" still say the same thing?

or is it that 'intelligent dance music' is
self-congradulatory, and you happen to agree with it, so,
you feel that the name is ok?

i'm not trying to start a flame war... just offering a
different viewpoint.
