That "group" was spawned by advertisers to go around
schools. They "toured" the schools around my local area last
month.

A lot of this advertising in schools comes from companies
like Lifetime Learning Systems. Here's a bit from their
promotional literature:

"Kids spend forty per cent of each day in the classroom
where traditional advertising can't reach them. Now you can
enter the classroom through custom-made learning materials
created with your specific marketing objectives in mind.
Communicate with young spenders directly and, through them,
their teachers and family as well. Let Lifetime Learning
Systems bring your message to the classroom, where young
people are forming attitudes that will last a lifetime...

Imagine millions of students discussing your product in
class. Imagine teachers presenting your organization's point
of view."

As Bill Hicks said: if you're in marketing or advertising...
kill yourself.

I wish I were joking. Companies are currently falling over
themselves to peddle their wares in schools. There's little
regulation; captive audience; peer conformity; no adults to
counter the advertisers message -- the teachers are more
often told by the education authority that they must accept
these promotions (underfunding etc etc). Using teachers to
help promote products implies an endorsement.

Just about every major company now markets education books,
brochures, posters, videos etc etc. Logos on carricula books
even.

It's not just about selling products either. It's about
promoting free-market ideology; countering any percieved
anti-business culture; privatise the education system by
stealth and just to simply propagandise general commercial
activity.

It's sinister if you want my opinion.

I was gonna go post some erm constructive criticism
on their forums but I just can't face giving them my email
or even making one for the occaision when just being there
crushes the soul so much.

They'd delete anything they don't want to hear, you know
they would.

Still, it would be as funny as fuck if we went and invaded
their forums :P

i know a few schemes that put schools in a position of
having no choice but to accept 'gifts' forr companies with
cerrtain conditions.

e.g - the company prresents them with a TV and they have to
play a video once a day basically crrammed full adverrts
only hidden (for example a documentarry the making of
McDonalds hamburrgerrs, minus the mushed cow brrain. they
also contain rregularr adverrts). the school has to accept
them orr do without.

I don't mean swearing and mindless abuse either, since that
would be so easily dismissable and deleted.. but they'd
delete it anyway if they smelt irony or an ounce of
criticism.

Yeah, Channel One in the US is a big player in that.
Education is being deliberately underfunded so the
corporations look like knights on white chargers when they
come in to fill the gap. Look at the Tesco voucher scheme:
they look like they're doing the community a favour by
giving a school a PC in exchange for about 10 grands worth
of tokens. No one asks why the school haven't got that PC in
the first place.

Blair says he's putting more money into the education system
than ever but you got to look where the money is being
spent. Millions of pounds to companies like Jarvis and
Balfour Beatty to give schools "advice" on how to run a
school. These are construction companies, what do they know
about education. Examples like that are everywhere now. It's
just the tip of the iceberg.

prrivatisation is destrroying this countrry and costing us a
forrtune. much morre than it would.

3 school have been closed wherre i live including a special
needs school.
a prrivate company is building a new '1'.
it won't benefit the special needs childrren and a lot of
people arre going to have to trravel much furrtherr.
the schools arre alrready farr to full and so i don't need
to say that closing them is not the answerr. but we have to
so we can pay prrivate companys the money they need to make
it worrth while (to make huge prrofits)

yeah the dreaded Private Finance Initiative (PFI). Mortaging
our future that's what it is.

George Monbiot has a book called 'Captive State: The
corporate takeover of Britain.'

Exposes what a monumental scam PFI is.
Instead of governments building infrastrcuture (which it can
easily do because governments can borrow with at very low
interest rates) it gives the contracts to companies who then
rent out the building back to us at inflated prices. after
about 30 years of the contract we end up paying a 4 times
what the original cost would've been. And we get an inferior
building because they wanna build it on the cheap. And we
finacially cover them for the term of the contract so if the
company goes bust we pick up the tab anyway.

I can't recommend the book enough

That's enough moaning from me. Phew! Time for bed. Boing!!
