vh1.com gives a review synopsis of different critics
(rollingstone, nme, q magazine etc.) to give you an overall
picture of various albums.

Similarly, metacritic.com generates average scores from a
number of different online and magazine based critics.
Unfortunatly, only albums later than 1997/98 are included.
The site also does film, dvd/video, and games as well.
Check it out.

allmusic really is a great resource

i wonder how many people it takes to run that? I mean, it
has millions of artists/songs.

Who does all the bios and reviews? Its gotta be a fuckload
of people.

imdb.com is similar but for movies and television creeps in
too

maybe one day xltronic.com will be a site like that...

yea xltronic will be great except that it'll cover 1% of the
electronic releases already on all music guide.. with AMG
and discogs it's almost like a "why bother?" but the
difference is xlt will be an easier to use discography and
have bigger and more cover scans. plus AMG has a lot of
missing tracklists that xlt will have.

that would be cool...

a huge database of electronic music. and not just like,
certain people, or nonunderground... but EVERYTHING to do
with electronic music...

it would be cool if there was a site on the web that just
like, archived all the independent musicians out there.

like, you could either just submit... or they would have
people who would go around and find them all.

then catagorize them, and review them.

that would be sweet.

except 75% of the independent artists and releases no one's
ever heard of (and hence no one cares about)

heh, the guy who reviewed Drukqs for Allmusic.com picked
bit4 as one of his favorites from it... :)

thats my point!

it would be a great way to get exposed to new artists.

go to the IDM section, type in "glitch" and you get a list
of all the glitch artists.

randomly click on one (or there would be a rating system...
from the reviews, so you could see who are the better ones)
and then you could read about em, and hear some clips.

yeah, realistically this wouldnt work... but its cool in
concept. :-\

i find myself pretty bored with most amateur idm artists and
even artists on real labels that model themselves after
warp.. i just get an empty feeling listening to most of this
music because it's so rampant (because it's so easy to make,
requiring little to no musical experience or talent and
sometimes no emotional investment)

well, its easy to make... but not easy to make GOOD!

as with many styles of music really...

i think the problem with such a thing is theres no absolute
way to break things down. allmusic and discogs do good jobs
respectively. otherwise, i think communities and first hand
experience is the best way to learn about new music.

and of course, to make it yourself!

even well produced electronic music leaves me empty if
there's nothing original or meaningful about it

what i meant was, good in every sense...

i mean, there IS great electronic music out there. and thats
all that matters. just gotta wade through the crap, but the
reward is worth it!

of course.. half of what i listen to is techno. but like
rock, gosh there's just so much out there and so little is
really worth delving into.. it can be really hard to make a
good comprehensive independent electronic music site because
you really have to put your thinking cap on and decide
what's worth covering. so hats off to xlt and watmm for
setting a formula of covering only certain artists until
they're ready to expand in a sensible matter.

yeah definately.

an entire comprehensive list is a bit much, in retrospect

the majority of rock, metal, hiphop, jazz, classical etc
leaves me empty too. but i still love things about those
genres..

forget the crap, and enjoy the good stuff. theres "crap" in
every genre...as well as alot of subjectivity as to what is
and isn't crap.

allmusic which is cool.
