I will always buy CD's.

But not this. I listened to it in the store...there's clever
noise, and then there's noise. This is noise. Full stop.

"avart, please note that that's your own opinion."
- oh, t h a n k s for reminding me, I thought it was the
law.

"COME ON! music involves brain activity! don't be so lazy!"

- that reply was actually quite amusing, really funny, is
this your own opinion, something you recently figured out?

i've already posted my opinon on smojphace.

as for file sharing & mp3's, i think it is great. i, for
one, get most of the music i listen to now through soulseek,
and burn cds. if i like the album enough, i buy it on
vinyl.
now, i understand most musicians make music to make money.
BUT i have always felt that music should be free, because
it's not something you can contain. you can't stop air waves
from carrying sound, can you? like ijonspeches said: it's
like an advanced form of radio. whats to keep you from
making tapes from the radio? same thing.
i'm also not just saying this because i like to get music
free, but i am a musician myself, and i make my music as
cheap as i can make it. if anyone wants it, i put the whole
thing together myself and charge only for the cost of the
materials. i'm not interested in profit from my music,
because it is my art. i won't sell my art. only the
materials. sorry i'm rambling...

tolstoyed: you are so right, it is unfortunatly easier to
complain and whine about others lousy music than doing the
good music yourself.

and - of course that goes for myself included...

hmm, i meant that more like for the people that are
complaining about buying it and not liking it afterwards

you can always check it out first and then buy it if you
like it

as for "you are so right, it is unfortunatly easier to
complain and whine about others lousy music than doing the
good music yourself." - if he's (rdj) being a musician, he
could have shown some more quality in what he releases (tho
it could be that he/some fans actually like this release) -
especially becuase he's selling his music!
i belive most of people on this mb, dont sell their music so
i think they have the right to bash something if they dont
like it :)

(hehe, dont take me too seriously at the moment...im pretty
much under the influence)

or if you have it but you don't know how to use it,
ummm....figure it out! :D no really, it's not hard to use at
all

well, aubuc is ambient essentially, mostly experimental
and i put up some of my primary stuff: invisible man: found

"filesharing = artists starving! "
What a load of crap, artists will still make music because
they love to make music.
it's like painters, they can't live of selling their
paintings but still continue to paint.
Btw i think it will only get better with those boy/girl
bands and other lame "artists" will dissapear because of the
lack of income.

*laughs at all the big corporate companies that lose tons of
$ because people who listen to their made up "pop-shit"
artists have no problem with stealing.*

id like to have a study/statistic on this:
which groups/artists make loss in mp3 filesharing?
1. the big companies and boy/girlgroups
2. the lesser known artists

id say 1. because most people in here care about the
musicians that are lesser known.
also i think that mp3 the way we use it is like underground
radio and many artists are recommended and made known, that
nobody of us would have an idea they exist at all.

offline ijonspeches from 109P/Swift-Tuttle on 2003-06-22 06:26 [#00751358]
Points: 7974 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

but i see what the danger is...
i dont buy as much as i might do if i hadnt mp3, but i would
buy more shit and less of the unkown artists.

SOLUTION: mp3s that destroy themselves after 20 listens.
its not safe, but would you bother dling it again when you
already know you want to have it on vinyl or cd?
i wish it would be like that sometimes, cause i got to admit
that im not spending enough money on music like i would do.
then again im jobless and dont pay my internet myself. and
im very sad i dont find radio stations that i really like.

why not work for free then...i mean some artists might as
well just make music and give it straight to us lot for free
and thank us for being so cool.....in fact downloading is
boring me now...i just get i t all sent to me in the mail
for free, usualy with a letter from the artist thanking me
for liking his music! sometimes IF the tune is good enough,
i ll send some food.

a lot of small labels would be able to release more stuff if
they had sold as much as people have downloaded....

you assume that the market for cds is as large as the
transfer volume of p2p networks. that's wrong cause people
download for very small reasons, just like i sometimes queue
a album or two only cause i read that name somewhere. i'd
never buy a album or two for such reasons.
so a downloaded album is in general not a loss for a record
company because the thing that gets lost never was there.
what they get is free advertisment for the artists.

i found out about idm via p2p and bought a lot of cds. warp
would sell half of their records without the help of
soulseek.

offline hobbes from age on 2003-06-22 08:41 [#00751438]
Points: 8168 Status: Lurker

no im not assuming that at all.....i understand that not
even half the people who download would have been potential
buyers anaway....

but i dont know about you......but its just more and more
common around me that people dont care about buying the
records anymore...and especialy electro stuff (not counting
deejays)....i have so many mates who couldnt care less about
going to the shop coz they have all that they want for
free...some people keep their computers on all night just to
keep endlessly downloading music!!
i mean the big records company can all die as far as im
concerned....im just worried about the FACT that it also
hurts smaller people.....

i mean i admit sometimes i will download something out of
impatience.... like maybe once a month to check some stuff
out...but i mean some folks are really hardcore with the
process....

I can't say I know anybody at all who downloads music for
free as a substitute to buying it. Those who do download
generally download things they would probably never buy.

As for myself, I either download stuff that's completely
legit, or whch I can't get by legit means.
