i know there's already quite a debate about the term IDM. To me it seems rather pretencious (intelligent, as opposed to.....), and I don't dance to it.
My question is; does anybody here that makes their own music refer to it as IDM?
I'm not a big fan of labels, but I would probably refer to my music as maybe electronic, or minimalist, or Braindance, or M.

i refer to it as IDM, only for the conveniance that people will know what im talking about.
I prefer experimental electronic music. Ambient music, and minimalist music.

idm is a nice blanket term which, in my mind, refers to the outer-expanses of all electronic genres... kinda like Lappland; it's not just the extreme north of one country... it's the extreme north of three!

Zeus; I use the term IDM aswell, simply to get the point across. But I like the terms give by Co-existense. Those terms are what raises my eyebrows.
And ecnadniarb, I like "mindjig". Doesn't take itself too seriously.

I really enjoy terms like ;drill and bass; or ;ambient; or 'I use those little high-pitched tapping/clicking sounds with pretty reverb' kind of thing...
when talking to heads it's fastest to say IDM and then list some influences- most people will then become eager to hear it or roll their eyes... it's wonderful

"EEM"! Yes! That's it!
Exactly that same amount of letters as IDM so people can't complain that "it takes too long to write/say".
From now on, if I need a short answer/label, I think I will use EEM.

then they stop asking me stupid questions.

I think if I was to dress like a fashion punk people wouldn't have to ask what kind of music I make. But if they did I'd stab out their eyes with my mohawk spikes. And then I'd tell them EEM and not explain it. Maybe they'll missunderstand my murmer and think I meant emo. There.

we could have a consistent fashion and no one would have to ask... but we'd have to pare down what idm applies to... we could look even more fucked up than the punks, and people would know "they're drillers", or we could walk around in oliver coloured jumpsuits with black hornrimmed glasses, and slicked down (or no) hair and people would know; "they're minimalists"...

I used to be in a rather straight rock and roll band, but whenever I used that term, people needed more of a decription. The next few minutes would entail me using any word I could think of (relatively speaking) until they realised that they should probably just listen to the music.

One genre's accessories should definitely be a pair of glasses made from the bottom of beer bottles. One lense should be green the other brown - we'll call 'em spiders after Spider Jerusalem and there IDM will be that of the obnoxious truth! Yes, no we're finally getting somewhere...

All the record stores in sweden use Electronica. IDM seems to only exist on the internet and in some articles .
The word elektronica has TRON innit so its a semi ok word for me.

I also hope more music makers will tell me what they like to call their music. And what they think of the term IDM.
