TuneFish from T.O. on 2001-02-23 20:55 [#00000303]

Talk about punk? That is a little bit further from AFX than
jazz... :))

Torley Wong from Vernon, BC, Canada / WWW.TORLEY.COM on 2001-02-23 21:10 [#00000305]

hmmm... maybe it depends on what sort of approach you're
taking towards this :)!

the punk spirit is a rebel one, along the lines of what
Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols once said. that being said,
Aphex is certainly a nonconformist and quite rebellious at
times -- so tracks like "Come To Daddy" and "Ventolin" might
be a type of techno-punk, at least in attitude.

then again, it depends who you ask :o).

heh i notice this board now has a "Notify me of future
replies" option. sweet.

hedtwin from Manchester, England. on 2001-02-23 21:10 [#00000306]

punk hey? well that really just depends on what type of punk
you wish to talk about. There are lots of diffrent types of
punk, ska, neo, hardcore, reggae, the list is endless!! Ok,
i will shut up now, feel free to send me abusive e-mails.

Torley Wong from Vernon, BC, Canada / WWW.TORLEY.COM on 2001-02-23 21:13 [#00000308]

hedtwin: you sound like a connoisseur du punk. do you
consider pop-punk like Blink-182 and Green Day to be punk?
:)

think from lincoln,ne on 2001-02-23 23:06 [#00000314]

Torley Wong from Vernon, BC, Canada / WWW.TORLEY.COM on 2001-02-23 23:17 [#00000317]

heh who needs to be sedated?

i think Goldfinger and Pennywise might count too.

oi! oi! oi!

come to think of it, "Oi" is the name of one of the tracks
on the forthcoming Orbital longplay.

Mr. Bighead from Coolidge,AZ on 2001-02-23 23:23 [#00000319]

Basically, the rebellious attitude present in punk is
present in any music worth it's spit. I myself wouldn't even
consider a band like the Pistols to be the originators of
the style and the attitude. We could go into a whole debate
over who started it but that would get us nowhere. It was
about being hatefully remembered. Now, let's think about how
disimiliar Richard James and Richard Hell really are.

Antoher thing about punk is that it really hasn't had truly
rebellious spirit since bands like Green Day and NOFX
started to rise in popularity. The music has just turned
into a whole nother realm of mass consumerism.

I'd really love to play a gig after a punk group or with a
punk group. It would be so nice to walk on stage with a
laptop and just rip the place to shreads! Then all those
poser punks would be saying shit like "Where's yer guitar?"
"Techno sucks!"

They really wouldn't even realise I just did something more
punk in spirit than they ever could.

And a note on tagging,
Henry Rollins once said that he didn't get graffiti. I mean
"if you're going to spray paint something, why not spray
paint something cool? Tag a fucking cop! I hate you pig!"

hedtwin from Manchester, England. on 2001-02-23 23:24 [#00000321]

i am a big fan of ska punk, such as Less than jake. I would
count pop-punk as punk. Just not very good punk. Their early
albums were good. I also used to skate to them back in the
day. As in last summer, god i am sad.

"its my job to keep punk rock elite" nofx

hedtwin from Manchester, England. on 2001-02-23 23:28 [#00000323]

Mr. Bighead: I was goign to do that about 3 monthes ago!!
But then my computer broke down :-(. It would have been very
funny

Torley Wong from Vernon, BC, Canada / WWW.TORLEY.COM on 2001-02-23 23:32 [#00000325]

Mr. Bighead: ah, then if i may, i'll cite an example of
rebelliousity in classical music: viva Stravinsky! the power
to incite riots with a few dissonant chords. and in country
music, Johnny Cash but i'll say no more :). who are some of
your favorite punk artists?

i suppose it all depends on what someone considers to be
rebellious. funny how terms like "alternative rock" are
still being used, huh?

your idea about a punk postgig is an interesting one. aren't
artists like Kid606 known for doing this on occasion?

Rollins has a good voice. he's very good at reading poetry.

ha -- Zen philosophy. now there's punk!

Mr. Bighead from Coolidge,AZ on 2001-02-23 23:38 [#00000329]

Well, basically my favorite punk groups are Black Flag, the
Adicts, Guitar Wolf, the Boredoms, and the Dead Kennedys.

The funny thing about the world famous Rite riot is that a
good amount of it may have had something to do with
Nijinsky's poor choreography. Stravinsky seems to remember
that the laughter and mockery started once the dancing
began. Or maybe he was just a bit ashamed of the little riot
that made him even more legendary?

hevquip from somewhere in the u.s. on 2001-02-23 23:50 [#00000332]

punk rock, does that count?

Poseur from My own anus on 2001-02-24 22:00 [#00000410]

I love Aphex, but I love punk also. It was pretty funny
actually, I'm listening to Pennywise and then this post
"Let's talk punk" comes up. And don't say punk sucks. Never
say any kind of music sucks. No music sucks. Just say you
don't like a certain type of music, or even hate it. I'm
definite that no one here is the number one, certified music
critic of all time.

Besides, you can say that Burger King's burgers are better
than McDonald's, but you can't say that burgers are better
than celery.

diastole from http://homstead.com/diastole1 on 2001-02-24 22:59 [#00000420]

yes you can.."celery is better than bugers"

During downtime on the road, AFI will write material for
their next album, and Havok and Puget will log tracks for an
electronic side project called Blaqk Audio. The music,
influenced by the likes of Aphex Twin and DJ Shadow, will be
made entirely with computers.
