Yet another new track

I don't know what's with me lately... this is the 3rd track
for my EP, the 2nd one I might post later this week, and the
CD will be coming out as soon as I can find someone who will
do cover art for me.

This one is something like noise meets ambient meets
Venetian Snares... my first real attempt at drill and bass.
Comments, as always, very appreciated, and feel free to post
links for me to review... cheers!

Shameless bump

Because I updated it... added some parts, put it up again,
I'm very happy with this track. Feedback!

nice...

I love tracks like this. I know it's sometimes difficult to
give a good sample a nice sound when applying it to a
melody, but you've really pulled it off.

I also like the way it progresses. alot of changes but no
sudden leaps.

Coolio!

Alright... I think I'm putting out things a bit too fast to
do this. I'm going to hold off putting more things up for
you guys until I have a full CD ready to release...

Back to work, back to work

The track is quite good...the only problem is it is
obviously a fruityloops track. :(

Hmm... didn't use fruity at all... I can see that though...
just analog synths and a sequencer

No, the horrible drums are the fruityloops ones. I can spot
that nasty snare drum a million miles away. It is something
that I really really hate :P

Hah... quite possibly, I ripped most of the samples apart
before I put it together, I'm guessing you mean the white
noise one that comes in the beginning, I have no clue where
I first got it from

offline ecnadniarb on 2003-06-18 06:21 [#00745942]
Points: 24805 Status: Lurker | Show recordbag

No not the white noise...the actual snare drum that you use
right throughout the entire track, and all of the other drum
sounds...plus the white noise... :D

offline Sanguine from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-06-18 06:26 [#00745945]
Points: 859 Status: Lurker

Huh... I think most are just standard sounds, basic
packages, wonder what gives it that "fruity" feel to it... I
shall have to go experiment, I really haven't fooled around
with fruityloops much. I could pick out a Reason 2.0 song
easily though.

compositionally, i like it alot. very nice note choices,
very pretty. i like the rhythmic stuff, too. very
slow-building. yeah, this is really nice... good vibe to it,
overall.

i DO, however, agree that some of the sounds could use some
work. they sound pretty straight out-of-the-box. not all,
but some. all in all, a very good piece.

Maybe I am wrong then... :P

Sanguine...I doubt you could very easily pick out a Reason 2
song if it is done properly. :D

Hehe... I doubt you could pick out a fruity song if it's
done properly... it's a nice little program. I was aluding
to the very typical compression, delay and reverb it uses,
really limited for mastering.

Yes... great feedback... I think tomorrow I'll work on the
drums, see what I want to change and how. Drums are
definitly my weak point still, I'm holding off on my melodic
insanity for later.

The actual drum programming is pretty much spot on, it is
just the sound of the drums that is the problem.

It shouldn't matter what noise it is...

When someone plays a triangle, people don't say "na it's
crap, everyone can use a triangle."

But it detracts from the track when it sounds like every
other fruityloops produced drill track has ever sounded.
Diversity i the drums used would add to the impressiveness
of the song.

That is just my opinion anyway :P

I totally agree... I think I can do better

As such, I consider it a challenge, so I'll go have some fun
with it.

They're not saying it's crap, just that it's a typical
sound... I think both chrispy and I simply missed out on the
fruity craze and don't know the typical sounding stuff. I
try to avoid the typical 303/909 sounding drums and synth
patches for just that reason, unless they exactly fit what
I'm trying to do.

I'll post an update after I get a good day working through
it.

i agree. if you want your track to sound your own, and to
have it's own essence, then you need to make it sound like
it exists as its own thing. if you can pick out a sound
you've used before in something, it's kinda not good.
sometimes it works, if the mode is more tongue-in-cheek, but
in this instance, no. it's a somewhat hypnotic piece, kinda
like something off download III. therefore, if the sounds
are gonna be simple, as in not heavily saturated with
effects, then they must at least be somehow altered to sound
(perhaps) not like synthetic drums.

For me the biggest challenge in making drums is making them
all sound like they came from the same drum set. Same
reverb, same ambient noise, same pitch, same warmth, etc.

I've never tried drill n bass before. Lots to learn, lots to
experiment with. The more I listen, the more I agree, it has
a fairly standard electronic drum sound, although I still
like the changes, so it's just the individual samples I have
to check out.

Although having a song have the same basic sounds as
everyone else and just being a dozen levels above them makes
you look like a god... I want to find the Mozart of
fruityloops and shake his hand.

Updated.

Drums are... a little different... I think they're better
for a few good reasons (things I did) but the sounds might
still be a little stale. I'm honestly not sure. I like it at
this point, it's up to par now.

Oh, and more importantly I decided to test different
compressions and am now using something with knocked 7MB off
the file size down to a nice manageable 9MBs... enjoy

I hear no standard issue drums now. Great track. Very
snares'ish only with more melodies. I like.

Kadath.mp3 and Tryst.mp3 are in the same directory... this
is, like I said, my first drillnbass song, so don't expect
the others to be the same *nod nod*

Thanks for the feedback!

Morg:

I don't like the way the drums sound almost exactly the
same. Kind of slide around a lot in the beginning. Hi hats
do too, very little difference, makes it get tedious to
listen to pretty quickly, especially with the flat melody.
It's minimalist drum and bass with a ton of bass
frequencies. Just leaves it feeling less energetic than I
think what you were going for. Could just be a mastering
problem

There are a lot of changes in the drums that are good, but
it takes some seriously listening to get to them. The more
electronic sounding stuff near then end helps pull the track
up quite a bit. In my opinion (and that's all) it would be
better if you played on the electronic melody earlier and
then added something else above the drums.

Some good foundation for good tracks though, the tricks you
used with the drums are well done. Keep it up!

No more comments? Guess I'll go work on some minimalist
stuff to make up for this... until tomorrow

no, it just sounded a little borrowed.. i thought it was
from radiohead's "no surprises" at first but then it changed
a lot. it could be merely coincidental.

kinda surprised to see this thread up here again, I'm
actually reworking my drill and bass, the next track will be
out soon and WAY better.
