Fave old school techno producer? Fave techno track?
Derrick May - Nude Photo
To date there is that feeling of pure futuristic ecstasy that just drips out of his tracks...'hail to the master'.

808 state when on form were really good. all the line-up changes squeezed their talent and groove away. also a.g.c. gerald's voodoo ray is right on the money

Old Detoit techno is great. I'm very happy that somebody on this MB is remaining old goodies. Derrick May and Juan atkins are definately the two greatest old school innovators! kevin Saunderson is my less favorite.

Yeah! Pschyche and BFC is great! Here are my favorite detroit producers:
Juan Atkins, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Underground Resistance, Drexciya, Suburban Knight, Anthony Shakir, Blake Baxter, jeff Mills, Kenny Larkin, Eddy Fowlkes,... It is a pitty of that there are just a few Detroit lovers on this MB.

Jingle : Yup about 808 State...but unfortunately, their best work(IMO) was Newbuild. It was all downhill from there. But I just love Newbuild
Artemis : Gotta love old school techno. A lot of it can still make me go, w.t.f. And that to me is a mark of a true techno track. And how happy am I to see a Detroit school music lover on this board? VERY.
Joyrex : Carl Craig is phenomenal. Love his stuff, for ever and ever. I love his jazzier stuff too. What about you?

Strings of Life - again by Derrick May...
I so wish he'd return to those days...last I heard the pressure of being the #1 detroit techno god has left him in a creative rut....
Too high Expectations, I guess; coupled with the self-doubt that dogs innovators & all artists.......(similar to AFX in that respect...)..

Caril Craig isn't given the props he deserved for "Bug inthe Bassbin" ....That played double-speed was the KEY track in the beginnings of jungle....
With his later stuff I'm no big fan, I must admit....

Didn't...but his later work is rabidly experimental acid house...not techno as we know it. Doesn't stop me from loving Consumed and Sheet Music though.

jand, I know what you mean...Somehow I just don't see someone throwing a brilliant 808 track and string melody on a 8 track and releasing it again. Ever. Not even Derrick May himself.
It is somehow odd that Kevin Saundersen and Juan Atkins switched to pure house for their DJ sets. Carl Craig is prolly the only one still making music that souds like it is beamed from outer space.
PS. LOVE that "bug in the bassbin" track. Love it just as much at 33 and 45 rpm.

Carl Craig's latest project, The Detroit Experiment is unbelievable. Basically it's a collection of Detroit artists (mostly jazz musicians) who did live studio sessions and then had Craig do a little tweaking afterwards.
My favorite electronic album so far this year.

I've heard a lot about it...haven't had a chance to hear it yet...I am on a severe downloading embargo due to space restrictions on my primary magnetiic storage...
As soon as I have some space, Jeff Mills and Carl Craig are up next.

I see nothing wrong in talking about Ae...I do it all the time :)...but I also love old Detroit stuff. Still. I guess it is the same way that you can love both Radiohead and The Beatles...I love both Detroit techno and newer IDM.
I said it before and I'll say it again...nice to meet you Artemis.

i'm bored of those threads too. this stuff is where rdj's early stuff came from, mr fingers, phuture, the jack trax compilations all amazing old stuff.
saw jeff mills the other night at sonar, both on thurs and saturday, and in my opinoin is possibly the best dj in the world. the man has been around for eons djs like a god and still produces some of the best music around.
