the past defines the present - that applies to words too - the definition that you quote of dictionary.com in fact betrays its roots. Sophistication isn't something to be praised, and as I said, I would never claim to be sophisticated. The state of 21st century English isn't exactly great is it? I try to avoid the bastardised standard that seems to pass for the norm nowadays - language is one of the great symbolisms - we see people not actually saying what they mean because they are not entrenched in the full history of language. |

i have my opinions who am i to say someone is too fat and should exercise? i don't mind fat people, they often have a good sense of humour and i think their lifes wouldn't become more happier if they had to watch their weight all their life because you don't like to look at them 'hey you know what? i don't like ginger chicks, they make me feel ill, why don't they go home and paint their hair black?' if someone was planning on saying stuff like 'yeah but the government has to pay $$$ every year 'cause of those fat people and their health problems' i'd advice you to make hate threads about smokers and drinkers first |

actually, obesity is set to be the top killer here in Scotland. And also, a person isn't obliged to mention anything else if it's not the topic of conversation - this thread is about fat people, not smokers or drinkers - fat people - if you want a tirade against those two sections of society, start the thread and I'll happily join in. Like I said, I have nothing but respect for fat people who are trying to lose weight -- to become HEALTHY human beings - it's the ones who think being fat is cool and are trying to make it some kind of status symbol (and I've seen plenty of them) that provoked this thread - maybe you should have read some of the posts more closely; a lot of facetiousness and jokiness for sure, but also quite a few good points. |

yes, you see, I like balance. The extremes of obesity and the uber-skinny chicks (who don't have anoreXia nerVosa) disgust me, especially when proposed as some kind of fashion status. If the extremes are due to illness or psychological damage, then I retire from attack, and would do what I could to help, which I have done before. |

I think a problem like obesity is a combination of factors - lots of people don't burn fat quickly, so they gain weight quicker. our modern society is mostly going towards hedonism - eat as much as you can. also, lots of people fill up an emptiness in their lives with eating. self-hatred can be a great engine for someone to start eating. what I'm saying: its not as easy to just say, "oh fat people should just stop eating". the problem lies much deeper. and I agree we should do something about obesity, but shouting all kinds of shallow crap isn't helping much. "then don't expect any help or sympathy" not expecting any help or sympathy is something else than calling people names. and even then, in how far can a person chose whether or not to fight an addiction? after all, it IS an addiction. so maybe help is needed, but not directly asked for. the last time a thread like this came up, it really hurt a few people on this board. |

OK. This has gone a but out of hand. The way I read it is that Marlowe is taking objection to people who are fat through their own laziness. People who're fat through illness, glangular problems whatever he has no problem with. These people have not made the choice to sit on their asses. He does also say that he finds akinny people just as disgusting. Basically Marlowe is saying that people that take the human body to extreme limits through choice are disgusting. People who are compulsive eaters through a psychological problem marlowe has no problem with. People who just eat badly and sit on their asses getting fat because they're too lazy to do anything marlowe has a problem with. People who're skinny because they're anorexic marlowe has no problem with. People who're skinny because they choose to be marlowe doesn't like. Now stop having a go at him. |
