Definitely classic! But I like The Blue Mask more. But it
isn't up to me, it's up to ITV.

The only classic Lou Reed album would be "METAL MACHINE
MUSIC" ;)

Could we consider that to be IDM?

my vote is a resounding of course
transformer is one of my most favorite albums EVER
I would call metal machine music IDM
I would not, however, call it my fav. lou reed... or even
palatable
it's VERY good to listen to if you're making angry art

metal machine music is "intelligent dance music"? that's
just as weird as that kid who called godspeed IDM

yeah, you're right
but the idea of kids dancing around to metal machine music
is too funny to pass up

It's a good album, but it has a few dodgy tracks on it, so I
don't think it can be classed as a 'classic' album - plus
the cover is just awful! :D

offline manicminer from Paris (France) on 2003-06-11 04:42 [#00736116]

Wasn't it produced by David Bowie and Mick Ronson (Bowie's
"Ziggy"-era guitarist)?

I believe that you're right! I'm sure Bowie co-produced it
anyway.

maybe not the best album everr, but a classic it is.

i watched it.

Cool! I actually managed to retain a little nugget of
rather useless trivia within my long term memory.

I'm happy.

Just found this:

"Personnel:
Lou Reed -vocals, guitars
Mick Ronson -guitars, piano, recorder
Mick Ronson, David Bowie, and Thunder Thighs -backing
vocals
Herbie Flowers -bass, string bass, tuba, backing vocals"

So it looks as though we were at least partly right!

Also check this out:
http://www.superseventies.com/spreedlou.html

It's got the original Rolling Stone review of Transformer
from 1973. The reviewer says that "Perfect Day" is probably
the weakest track, and that it's a song about drinking
Sangria in the park with a girlfriend. I could be wrong,
but I heard that song was actually about heroin.

yeah, I heard it was about heroin - I guess they mean that
they 'I'm glad I spent it with you' refers to the H? who
knows! I prefer his VU track 'heroin' in that case!

offline Anus_Presley on 2003-06-11 05:05 [#00736147]

i hate that hippy Rolling Stone editiorr that keeps having
his pointless input into the classic albums show.

offline manicminer from Paris (France) on 2003-06-11 05:08 [#00736152]

Isn't that 80s tune, "Golden Brown", also about smack?

"Golden brown, texture like sun, etc".

And yes, it's pretty obvious what the VU track "Heroin" is
about!

What other songs can we think of that were written about
skag? Or cocaine?

Bowie's "Ashes to Ashes" has cocaine addiction/paranoia
written all over it. One of my favourite ever pop songs
too. I downloaded an IDM remix of it once - can't remember
who is was by, it was really fucking good though.

'cocaine blues' by johnny cash! :D

Cool. Might have to give it a listen some time. I have a
friend who's really into the Stranglers, so when I
eventually return to the UK I'll borrow some CDs.

Wish I could remember who that Ashes to Ashes remix was by.
It was totally amazing. Everything had been fed through
loads of effects and there were some really nice drums. The
vocals were still on there, but heavily soaked in effects.
It was really lovely.

Loads of songs by that great 90s band Suede are about
drugs....... do you like them Marlowe? Dog Man Star is one
of my all-time favourite records.

Mind you, only the first two records (and a B-sides
compilation) are actually worth owning, because once Bernard
Butler left they became an utter pile of festering wank.

I really liked the first Suede album, to the extent of
buying a T-shirt, purple, with 'so we are a girl we are a
boy' (or whatever it was) :)

Wow, Suede T-shirts eh? They also had a pink one around the
same time with the legend "GAYANIMALSEX" emblazoned across
the chest. It was skin tight, too, and obviously extremely
camp.

I didn't buy one though. I was 13 at the time.
