the butterfly effect IS=
A discovery by meteorologist Edward Lorenz that demonstrates how a slight alteration in the initial conditions of a weather system (for example) affects major alterations in the behaviour of the system. a butterfly flapping it's wings over Tokyo causes hurricanes in MIAMI!!!!!!!!!!!...
Now fucking think about that!!!!

what about that sci-fi story about a company that allows you to go back in time to see dinosaurs. when you go back however, you must stay on the trail they have marked off for you. One fellow strays from the trail and steps on a butterfly. when he gets back to the present time, everything is the same except all words are spelled phonetically.
The effect of the butterfly dying prematurely (a butterfly that might have laid many eggs or been food for some larger animal which will now starve etc...)has a profound effect on the future.
there was a Simpson's episode based on this.

I love that story by Bradbury, nice stuff. It's like a hunting safari for dinos, but only ones that were meant to die anyway because killing anything else that wasn't meant to die would start some chain reaction... crazy. And it's a true story.

a kickass book by james gliek. who, by the way has written quite a few really good books.
that book expands on chaos theory, and is light on mathmatics, so even foolz like me can follow it. i recomend it highly.
