Reaktor - sheez maybe after I have more of the fundamentals of synthesis down - I understand how powerful it is but for me it's like being thrown into theoretical physics classes without knowing algebra.
What's max/msp about?
I have a pretty strong midi background so I tend to stick to traditional sequencer type proggies

Yeah, Reaktor is pretty fuckin' higher grade... need a PHD to figure it properly!
Max/MSP is a similar type of thing that uses scripting languages like CSound... apparently Autechre use it a lot... and Supercollider also... it's all very powerful, but FUCKIN' geeky!

aw man if only I'd discovered that stuff back during one of my extended unemployment remix days - but I had a crap computer back then.
Now that time is limited I like tools with lots of presets that demonstrate the capabilities of a given sound generator and can be tweaked in strange new directions. I just don't have eight hours to start with a sine wave and turn it into the sound of Napalm Death falling down a flight of stairs into an orchestra pit.

I started back in the day with Fasttracker, then I moved to Madtracker, now I use Renoise.
If you aren't familliar with tracking then these programs will appear absurd. I couldn't imagine doing a track any other way though.

With trackers tho, aren't you limited to phrase lengths with 64 divisions? Or at least an even number of divisions? I remember there was some silly limitation like that...

no, not at all.. not with anything I've ever used... that is if I am understanding what you are asking.
In the programs I've mentioned you can set phrase length (patterns) to any number of divisions (ticks) you wish.

Then I have a fundamental misunderstanding - it's not the first time -
So I just downloaded a renoise demo - do I understand correctly, that you can use VST instruments and plugins with this thing? Like Absynth and such?

Renoise would be a great tool if they optimized it some - the CPU usage is horrendous!

The best tracker by far is Skale Tracker. Its way retarded. It is the best tracker hands down try it out! The only thing it cant do is use BUZZ TOOLS, which well who cares right ? lol it has full dx vst support and its 24 bit.
Thats if you like tracking.
