i totally agree. but i wouldnt pay 50 quid or whatever for
some record im not gonna play, id rather hunt through
thousands of records at second hand stores looking for
bargains :)

I paid the recommended rate for a record as fine as that. I
would play it though. I'm a collector not a horder. Every
record I buy is for playing. Although that one I will play
less admittedly as I have the other J9.

It's not money to burn actually. I'm 21 soon and I have some
bonds that mature. I was going to get a computer with the
money but my Mum said I should get something special. To me
a rare record is special.

come of it! you'll play it once and thats it! so how much
did you pay for it then?

all good records are special. it doesn't have to be rare.

all good records are investments anyway, as all the
purchases of aphex twin, autechre, skam, dj shadow, etc.etc.
when they originally released have proved to be.

i've been told to catalogue all my records by my insurance
company and as i've got about 1500 its taking forever, wish
i'd never told them.

i update my list as i go along. do you have specific
insurance for your records then?

i told them i had several thousand pounds worth of records
and because it not 1 item, like a necklace or something,
they want me to list all individual records and to
photograph them. fuck the photos though that'll make the
spreadsheet massive. i've done 200 so far. thats taken me
ages.

I paid $200. You're mistaken if you think I'll only play it
once. I really will play it quite a bit.

lizardfister: 1500, woah! That's a lot of records. I haven't
counted mine for a while. I can't even remember what the
last count came to but it was only in the 100's. I haven't
hit the 1000's yet. I know that. I'm about to go through
mine soon actually. Catalogue them and chuck out all the
shit I bought years ago when i was trying to build up my
records so I could practice mixing. I may borrow the digital
camera from work and take pictures of each one to prove I
have it.

maybe i'll keep my mouth shut then! :)
sometimes i get piss scared somethings gonna happen to them
but i don't live in rusholme or fallowfield or somewhere so
they wont get nicked. ive been thinking of trying to make an
estimate of how much theyre all worth but i it seems an
impossible task. how would you start?

if i had paid that money for that record i wouldve bought it
its own special casing with sensor alarm! ;)

i haven't counted i'm guessing it could be more than that.

its nothing in comparison to some people i know. mr scruff
and treva whateva (ninja tune boys) have got around 20,000
and 8,000 respectively.

mind you we are 10 years older than you giginger so you have
plenty of time to catch up with us.

You're opinion is valid. I suppose the best way to start is
to go through each record and see if you can remember what
you paid for it. I can more or less remember give or take a
few quid here and there. More so with my eBay purchases.

Lizardfister: Forgot to reply about the specialness of
records. You're right when you say that it's not the rarity
of a record that makes it special. But in this case it is
for me. I've been trying to get this one for a while and
I've finally managed. It's the same with my Prodigy - What
Evil Lurks that I managed to get. I don't just enjoy the
music. I love hunting it down and trying to get it.
My most prized record though is my Commodores one. It's got
Machine Gun on it and I'd been trying to get a copy of that
for so long that it's now very special to me.

i used to get scared about them getting nicked because i
live somewhere only slighly better than fallowfield. but at
the end of it there are more important things in life.
anyway, the thief will have to spend ages picking out the
ones that are worth the most and he'll have to have
impecable taste. i'd probably have a sneaking admiration if
he just pulled out the records that are worht the most.

do you live in manchester then earthleakage? as a start
i've said on average they are worth £10 each to allow for
the ones that are crap - its a start anyway otherwise you
could spend forever trying to value them all. either that
or get the vinyl exchange boys in to value it pretending you
are going to sell it all to them!

fantastic record shops in manchester. thats possibly the
best thing about it. don't know much about nottingham
though. theres a few good shops in leicester though -
picked up a copy of bradleys beat for £1.99 there.

nottingham is ok but not brilliant. and the vip record fairs
now avoid nottingham like the plague because the turnout
used to be so poor. there's a nice shop in loughborough
which isnt far away called the left-legged pineapple, i
think theyve got their own website. sorry, don't know
leicester at all, but its only 45 minutes drive so i may
check it out sometime.

I like to do that too :D

We've all done that sir. Although I mainly buy vinyl, I
still get the odd CD every noe and then if it's something I
don't want to mix with/isn't on vinyl.

worship them.

My girlfriend think I'm the only one who is so dedicated to
spending my money on vinyl.

grand wizard theodore through to q-bert, craze, shadow, j5
etc.

it is fantastic.

your girlfriend needs to see this thread then.

my mate started seeing this girl and when she saw his
collection she said "a man with a massive record collection
really turns me on" - where do you find a woman like that?

im not a big hip hop fan but there is a couple of tracks im
after but im unsure of the artists names (i only have radio
recording of them).

what sounds like 'we got the funk' by 'MC lekim' (sp) and
hot daze (sp again) turn by 'hot day dantiss' (sp). both
from 1988, anyone heard of either?

She may do as she logs on here every now and then. She'd
never make me stop getting records she just finds it so
weird the lengths I'd go to to get one record.

can't help with that i'm afraid. its still a good film if
you don't like hip hop that much - you only have to
appreciate the music.
