I read this highly amusing description of the statue of
liberty in the book I am currently reading:

The vanity of the natives led them therefore to
concentrate their enthusiasm on a rejected statue of
commerce intended for the Suez Canal. This they had
purchased at secondhand and grandiloquently labelled
'Liberty enlightening the World.' They had been prophetic
enough to put it on an island with its back to the
mainland.'

Everyone hates everything anymore.

and everyone questions everything.

everyone tries coming up with these deep, inside humourous
thoughts about this and that to get attention or to draw
away attention.

No one lives peacfully anymore :(
