I haven't been around in ages (been very sick unfortunately), so hello everyone!
I posted a similar topic to this one months and months ago, asking what would be a good program to start making some idm. I got a few things (can't remember what they were because my compluter crashed and I lsot everything a while after I got em!) buuuuut, what I wanted to ask was: where can i read about how to make sounds and stuff from scratch? Everything is so complicated, where do I start! hehe, I'm still quite sick and won't be able to work for a month or so, so now would be a great time to start! Thanks in advance :)
Oh, and what program should a beginner like me start with?

I would use Fruity Loops to experiment with. Try and find a crack. Reason isn't half bad either

Once you have conquered what the newest Fruity Loops gives you then i would move onto higher ground.
Persoanlly, i prefer to make my IDM with instruments and FX but also with a few Software programs

First you need a degree in nerdology, lose all your friends by talikng about aphexs hair and what his favourite jelly is, sit in your computer chair for a few years so you have noodle like arms...then....you're ready to begin.

use cubase sx, it has the best sequencer, it's more advanced, it's easier and faster to make tracks with. with Reason's sequencer it's harder and not as easy. get Cubase SX and VST instruments and effects (i recommend Phatmatik Pro, Absynth, FM7, Haligon sampler and DR808)

Yeah, dump your gf, tell your mates not to call by your house anymore and just hole yourself up with Fruityloops for a few months. You'll get the basic concepts which you'll be able to use in other programs.
Although Floops isn't as bad as some people would have you believe. I still use it more than Reason...

Can you record your own samples into fruity loops? Or do you just manipulate stuff provided to get a unique sound? Thanks dudes.

my recomendations to make idm music:
buy lots of cans diferent ones (food cans, painting cans, soda cans...) then get some rope and some towels, bubble bags, lots of paper... try to join it all together and throw it downstairs... record it... then pass it to cd and then to your computer... some edition and there you go!

Thats a great suggestion...
Release the album as it is and it will work in the 'noise' sub-genre.
Sample Ravel/Debussy's strings and overlay it...and it will be called ambient.
And what is more. People will know you are intelligent.

take Fruityloops 3+ ...set the bpm on 400+...set the loops lenght to 64 bars...make beats within every 4th bar and sometimes every 2nd...make 4 or more bars in a row to get drill-effect (pitching the volume here = snarerush)...then you throw in some melody in the background, but keeps the bpm-feeling of the melody within 1/4 of the bpm (ie. 400pbm = 100pbm)...then you just keep copying the main beat for every loops, and add and remove different snares and drums for every time you copy it....this is basicly how to make beginners idm...you can always spice it up with samples, effects and more snarerushes...but that's it ;)

Reason - for sequencing and other gadgets
Soundforge - can generate sounds, edit and manipulate sounds. also check around the net for free plugins. also get hold of a dx wrapper which will enable you to use vst plugins too. sound created here can then be used in reson's sampler or drum-machine.
Free stuff to pick up off the net:
Stomper
Granulator - cool for making "IDM" sounds
Orangator
Free plugins.
Hope that helps ya.

get any soundeditor.
load in all your fave electronic tracks. snip bits out. paste the whole lot together.
surely, that MUST sound good, surely?

I use Hammerhead for loop stretching and sequencing, and occasionally Wave Enhancer for ambient tracks. (it's good for stereo effects)
Go to a pawn shop and get an old shitty keyboard for about $50 bucks (old Yamahas like PSRs and PSS are really nifty) and a shitty drum machine.
Get an 1/8 headphone jack, and some 1/4 and RCA adaptors and just record every single noise onto your computer. And i do mean EVERY single noise.
(If you use PC, use Microsoft Sound Recorder, set the Sound Quality to 44 Khz, 16 bit, and the recording control to Stereo Mix)
You might also want a small handheld recorder to carry around with you whenever you hear a good noise.
And if you can't afford a synthesizer, go for an old cheap effects processor. My Digitech RP7 works quite well.
And always record EVERYTHING you do, because you never know when you'll find your old recordings to be useful.
And by the way, Marlowe is correct. You can write IDM and still score some booty. :-)

"..and what do you do?" "me? I write Intelligent Dance Music." "there's an intelligent dance?" "what?" "the dance is intelligent in some way?" "no. I don't think so." "why's it called that, then?" "I think nobody really knows." "thats dumb." "um. yes. maybe. I guess." "so you write music for a genre with a dumb name?" "..." "well?" "yes..."

"Microsoft Sound Recorder"??! ...what the fuck are you on man? ...that is the crappiest piece of software ever build...there's plenty of other (almost) free programs that record better and in higher quality...like GoldWave
