hm i don't think many of you will be interested, but maybe
wmw ?
so, what are fractals ?

B. Mandelbrot:
A rough or fragmented geometric shape that can be subdivided
in parts, each of which is (at least approximately) a
reduced/size copy of the whole.

Mathematical:
A set of points whose fractal dimension exceeds its
topological dimension.

now, the contest is: make a fractal song, knowing the two
facts above, and post it on the net.

i wanted to make something like this for myself, but i have
no idea how. maybe some of you can make something like this
??

look at the mandelbrot explanation. every small part of a
fractal is a changed part from the whole thing.

you CAN make such a song. just have to imagine.

hehe i know i was foolin' around

and besides i have to learn to make a 'normal' track first,
only then i can get busy on that mandelbaum stuff of yours
:)
this will be in approximately 400 years

you have to make to look at the pictures to understand it
clearly

(fuck i sometimes really hate this "foolin arround" thing on
the board....
but almost all the time that's exactly what the board is
about... i love it :)

www.mp3.com.au/hummer
listen to the track red ballon in the sky

all it is, is the pads you can hear in the background
then the same pads speeded up and pulsed over the top
so its all the same thing but smaller versions of the whole
thing

is that what ur lookin 4?

im gonna give this a go, not today tho, im far to tired
right now. i really like these 'mini mix comps' people come
up with

my friend made a program that makes ambient soundscapes from
cutting up samples with a fractal based code, that can be
assigned to any parameter

its really awesome

Sort of like a fractal based granular synthesis? Sounds
cool.

I've written something like this before, but the important
thing in fractals is symmetry. You don't have to use
symmetry to specifically fractals even. A fractal is
"scaling symmetry". This means that ANYTHING can be
shrunk/expanded and somehow incorporated together with the
previous size to make something interesting. I think I know
the reason symmetry is interesting in our brains. It is
because we evolved to classify objects/ to find differences
between them. But when you look up and see two castles on
two hillsides that are exactly the same in complexity, your
brain can't distinguish them even though they are seperate
objects. I guess this is the mechanism that produces the zen
like/drug like effect... malfunctioning logic I guess.

For an example of something that uses symmetry but isn't
fractal in structure... say, flip an object around (mirror
symmetry) or have some drawing in one frame and in each next
frame (maybe in an animation) gradually change one small
part. or you can have a circle and then fiddle with it's
outline, making an oval or some other weird shape...
"similar but slightly different"- that's ususually what
interests me.

not really a contest. i don't have webspace yet so it would
be difficult. and i don't think this could be another
xltronic remix :)

whoo

im doing an essay on fractals... well i should be but im
pushing it to the deadline caus im lazy... and i was gonna
incorporate some fractal music stuff

but i didnt understand a fuck of it.. i downloaded FractMus
or something and it sounded crap

anyone has some examples of good fractal music

explorer plug-in for photoshop (or whatever it's for. can't
remember). that thing's a lot of fun when you're not in your
right mind. *shrugs*

really cool idea sadist... maybe use the same generative
techniques to make graphic fractals and apply that to audio

at this moment i have not actually recorded any of my
generative music but i got something that sounds kinda
fractaly (composed)

Probably been posted before, but this is an excellent bit of
software:

http://heanet.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/xaos/winxaos31
.pre3.zip

you can do real-time zooming, which is nice...

does the song have to be fully composed by fractals, or can
you add drums, etc?

i probably wont participate, but i was just wondering about
more specific rules like this? is there a deadline?

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2003-06-02 14:59 [#00724467]

ill be doing it..

but since you havnt given a deadline... I am gonna take as
long as I want. 1-2 months

no deadline, i just wanted to some idea for making some
music. and i want to hear your interpretations of the
fractal music. this is quite interesting.

please post your submissions in this thread. when i make
something i post it, too

Great track, Mr. Tenzin

I put an old track that I like "a fractal brewing of
fraggles" back at www.mp3.com/artificialselection if you've
never heard it.
