how much do people get fined, after the us goverment passes
a law that basically says "if drugs are found at a club,
that the promoter, the owner and the dj get fined" even
though none of them are actaully passing out the substance
?

$5,000 to $12,000, that kinda cuts out on the payence for
scratchin some wax

Well thats the law in the states not here (UK). Anyway back
to the topic. Anyone here in the UK got any ideas what
electronic artists command etc.

Dunno, but if heard Sven Väth, Jeff Mills & Dave Clarke
earn over 8000 $ for one night.

What individually? Thats for big clubs though. What about
artists of the Rephlex, Mu size.

around 100 pound for pubs and small places, or depends if
you want cut of the door.

just be happy with free drinks and 20 quid each if you're
just starting

The really big names - Tong, Oakenfold etc. can demand
between £5000-20000 per night. Lesser, but still household
names like judge jules etc can expect £1000-5000
(Leaders of a "fringe scene" I imagine ours counts as that)
can get around £1000 per show.

I'm quoting these figures from How to DJ: Properly by Frank
Broughton and Bill Brewster (DJs themselves)

All that said, AFX got paid £50,000 for 2 gigs in Brazil
once!

Me, I'm happy for £50 and free drinks for the night...

its around 10 grand for a Rephlex night, with a few artists,
so they probly earn around a grand a gig or something.

Your joking! 10 grand. Thats nuts. How do the promoters make
any money?

i know kid606 only got about £250 for a gig in manchester

£1000 per show! No wonder these people get sod all
bookings. At prices like that, it just about prices them
out.

Yeah but what was the capacity for the Kid 606 gig?

The really big venues/festivals have insane capacity
remember...

Ceri JC,

It all comes down to cost. If something isn't economic to do
then it ain't worth doing I guess.

offline phiz from Liverpool (United Kingdom) on 2003-05-30 10:29 [#00721048]

owners of the venues and such must make most through drinks
and maybe a cut of the tickets.

costs 10 grand for rphlex, depending on the venue, tickets
will be around 10 pound, 300-???? tickets sold, plus drinks
and other things on top.

not many events turn a profit, only the big guns, most of it
is promotion for the artists or labels, gigging and doing
events is one of the main forms of promotion so the actual
artists usually play for nothing till theyve been around for
a while

offline promo from United Kingdom on 2003-05-30 10:33 [#00721053]

Venues have got their costs too.

10 grand is total rippsville. If your an outside promoter
then putting on a Rephlex gig is a waste of time. If you got
1000 people through the door it'd be a miracle! Its only
economic for Venues as you say.

offline phiz from Liverpool (United Kingdom) on 2003-05-30 10:49 [#00721061]

thats it, the Artist is fucked besically until they can get
some sort of following or become a commercially viable
prospect (??), Rephlex i think has the status and security
to be able to demand 10 grand, i mean look who owns the
label, he's not arsed about turnover for the label, more a
thing of giving the people on the label a living instead of
scraping it.

most electronic artists must be makin nothing.

offline promo from United Kingdom on 2003-05-30 12:56 [#00721203]

Oh sure totally. Thats the real world. Though electronic
artists have to first and foremost do it for pleasure.

I think the irony of events like the big ones especially is
its just basically a way to shift booze. So many business
are based on just shifting booze or drink at inflated prices
especially in London.

most play for airfare and hotel. if the artist is staying
with someone in the area then anywhere from 100-300
depending on the artist and the draw. as well as the cut at
the door.

that equals shit basically if they are on a tour. so next
time youre at a show remember to buy the merch the artist
sells because that is how they are feeding themselves.

i dont know about large name acts but the above is average.

offline promo from United Kingdom on 2003-05-30 13:42 [#00721252]

$100 dollars, thats fine. Thats £60 not bad for playing
some music for 1 hour.

thats for a released artist, alot of opening acts and no
name people dont get anything and play for the exposure and
free drinks. i did that route for years. although i will
generally play for free drinks no matter what.

:)
