well, saw the 4tet, manitoba, prefuse gig last night.

it was my first "electronic" show... well, perhaps that's a
lie, i saw freeworm live a year ago, but they had lots of
instruments on stage, so it was more live than laptop.

cant remember who opened the whole show, perhaps the drummer
from tortoise? i think that's who it was. he was playing
on his laptop, and drumming along. first time i saw a
drummer only show. neat. he had some pretty fuct beats.

then came fourtet, which was good, he played some of the
stuff off his rounds album, which i recently got. the thing
is, it was not that much different from the cd versions. i
asked myself at the end of the show, why "play" this music
"live"? all he did was stand there with his right finger on
a mouse, and his left finger on a sequencer, or something.

manitoba... WOW! oh my deity, what a mean bastard. they
came out wearing bear masks, with red hoodies, and a
projection screen in behind. most of the stuff was from up
in flames, which was quality, since i only know this album
from mb. two drummers and a guitarist, plus the
pre-recorded vocals and beats. the screen in behind them
had wonderful cartoon sequences happening. they had videoes
cued perfectly to the music... included in the videoes were
people with huge egg heads and cute little faces singing
along on jacknuggeted, an animated crayon drawing sequence
with SKUNKS, and the best was the flying and racing donkeys
on TWINS. the outro was everytime she turns round its her
birthday, too. and it went on forever, with peaks and
valleys, every time you thought it was over, they kept
bringing it back up for another go. manitoba, what a wicked
show. one of the best shows ive ever seen...

prefuse 73: well, i found it kind of similar in feeling to
the fourtet show. good music, but not very live. one guy
scratching and one guy on the lap top. if i wanted to
listen to prefuse like this, id just play the cd. i figured
they would at least have a guy on vocals live, but no...

the original post):

see manitoba again.

Actually, there was another guy with Scott at the
Houston show. And joey's right, the Prefuse set didn't seem
very inspired. Beans was dope, tho.

im certain it was prefuse 73, seeing as how it said on the
bill fourtet, manitoba, and prefuse 73, and he played all
the shit from one word extinguisher. but it sounded like it
was straight from OWE.
