Orchestral Soundscapes?

Can anyone reccomend me some orchestral music... thats more
soundscape/ambient/atmospheric then usual?

Like.. I think philip glass kind of falls into this
somewhat... but is there anymore?

Pure orchestral music, that sets a mood, instead of telling
a story.

Thanks!

Well, you should check the new Lexanculpt album on Planet
Mu.

Theres bits that have cool splatterbeats in the background
and other bits that sound like classical music.

its grrrrreat!

György Ligeti - Atmospherés

a piece from the 50's i believe, mostly atonal, focusing
more on the color of the sounds and building them as long
swells.. much like some ambient music today.

I don't know...I kinda felt that Ravel and Debussy fall into
that category.

I want to hear more music like Next Heap With. Reminds me of
Bowser's Castle for some undefinable reason.

set fire to flames
its a godspeed sideproject.. they record everything in an
old run down barn..its basically subtle orchestral music
mixed with ambient noises.
more atmospheric than godspeed.

i'd also say the tired sounds of stars of the lid..but its
not pure orchestral.. more orchestral with subtle electronic
manipulation.. but its definitely ambient

i guess your best bet for orchestral soundcapes would
probably be film scores.
look for the score to 'angels of the universe' by hilmar orn
hilmarsson.. it has two tracks by sigur ros as well..so
stores usually have it under sigur ros.
try angelo badalamente(sp) maybe?

shit.... film scores.
what about "one flew over the cuckoo's nest"

that would be a great score!

Rachmaninoff: Isle of the Dead
Debussey: La Mer (many others)
Ravel: Pavanne for a Dead Princess

The impressionistic composers did a lot of soundscape work.

Also Mahler symphonies, Holst's The Planets

If you want more suggestions I'd be more than happy to
oblige

H. Górecki - Lento e Largo - Tranquilissimo from Symphony
No. 3 Op. 36

Erik Satie - Gymnopedies (nr1 especially)

yeah, eric satie kinda invented 'ambient music' ..though he
called it 'furniture music' at the time.. its based on the
same idea of sorta falling into the background and becoming
part of the environment.
im not sure if its very sound-scapish though.. harold budd
might be a bit better for atmospheric piano music.

you should also look into arvo part.

You see, thats the point. Nowhere to click, so you do not

Actually, with both Ravel and Debussy, I would suggest their
wor for string quartets Exceptional work. Debussy's is in G
minor and Ravel's is in F major. The pieces are very similar
and very very beautiful.
