dancing = pop?

Okay bear with me here while i try to explain this...

If a song is easy to dance to, does that make it pop? Think
about this: Trance/house/techno is very popular because it
is easy to dance to and it gets a lot of playtime in the
clubs. Now some of you will say "so-and-so is danceable but
he/she isn't pop." Now, what if 'so-and-so' had more
exposure? A lot of music talked about on this board has a
good beat and its in 4/4 time, however its not popular and I
believe this is because of lack of airtime/playtime/media
attention.

My point being: Does making a good dance tune (in any style)
automatically destined to be more popular than an
undanceable tune?

so what about, for example, a waltz?

so does this have to do with our ancient ancestors gathered
around the campfire playing drums? Is it just in our blood
to like good dance tunes?

As the great Rass Kass said on Sould On Ice (it was about
rap but applied here too)

"Make a radio hit, heads criticize it,
underground classic no body buys it,
so rap is fucked and everything blowing up sounds redundant"

so when I produce my obscure electronic record which never
goes mainstream, rap is fucked?

I don't know. I really don't.

I know most 4 to the floor stuff either bores my tits into
oblivion or irritates me to the core of my being.

SO IT IS TRUE!

I always suspected, but never knew for sure.

WE MUST REFRAIN FROM PRODUCING NON-COMMERCIAL RECORDS
NOW!!! IT COULD MEAN THE DOWNFALL OF RAP, DAMN YOU!!

The downfall of rap may not be a bad thing...it might mean
more people will listen to idm...which mean more people will
visit this board...which means perhaps some of them would
listen and comment on my music :D

WE MUST START PRODUCING MORE NON-COMMERCIAL RECORDS
NOW!!! IT COULD MEAN THE DOWNFALL OF RAP, DAMN YOU!!

Pop implies made for the public. Dancability has nothing to
do with it... hazy lines

When I think "pop" I think top 20 hits right now... popular
rap with no real message besides buy this, buy that, bling
bling, wtf.... boy bands with no talent... ANYONE who has
their music written for them... anyone who is popular for
reasons other than talent, or at least 50% talent... any
band I can immediately pick out that will be a one hit
wonder

There are plenty of popular artists (popular at one point or
another) that I wouldn't consider "pop"

Orbital, Tool, Chemical Brothers... they make "pop" sounding
pieces which sound cookie cutter, but it isn't the majority
of their work

"Dancability has nothing to do with it..."

what!?

how did you get that idea? have you looked at Top 40 lists
lately?

there are ballads too, yes, but those also are not that
strange rhythmically.

naaaa pop literally is how popular something is.

i can dance to pusher which isn';t pop
but i can't dance to ballads
which are pop.

danceability really has quite little do to with it.

yes

because popularity is based on radio play which is primarily
directed at teenagers who spend their parents money to by
music they can dance to

But I think when any person hears a song they wil
instinctually be drawn towards it if its a good dance tune.
But like in qrtr's case he wouldn't, but that is only
because he's heard many different types of music and he
prefers more abstract things. However maybe qrtr doesn't
like to dance :) I bet qrtr could write a good dance tune
if he wanted.

god my band director would flip over this topic. he'd say,
now guys, everything but "art music" is pop...

he would say, "pop music has its place, it is great for
expressing the times, but art music is where it's at.
there's a reason that it has stayed with us for hundreds of
years."

define 'a dance tune' that'll make 12 year olds and 45 year
olds feel the need to start moving.

qrtr is just being contrary....

it IS true I do not like to dance, yes.

and it's not like I hate ALL 4/4 tracks - but 99,9% of
them.

I understood the question on a purely rhythmical level
though - 4/4 just appeals more to people, whether they want
to dance to it or not.

I still come back to what I said earlier - look at the
current top 40 of your country. how many tracks there
feature an unusual rhythmical base?

I agree. just doesn't mean when you hear it you have to drop
everything you were doing and start dancing,
JivverDicker.

actually, I only say this to be contrary. :P

read again what you are agreeing to........'any person' etc.
read it again.......maybe you are not being contrary (but
you are you lying witch!), it just looks like that 8 p

well, it depends on what you call a "good dance tune"
ofcourse.

if you have a point to make though, just make it, don't get
all cryptical on my ass! :)

AND! in what way do you think I'm being contrary?

because I say I generally don't like 4/4 stuff?

You can have a good 5/4 or 6/8 dance tune also. As long as
it has a catchy beat (ie: no Vsnares or most AE)

i say vsnares and ae, because they are more abstract: if you
dance to them thats fine, but I bet you look silly doing it
;)
