Video KILLED the RADIO star!

ehhehe......i heard this song on the radio (great song
too!) today and it made me think of something.

how so many music acts today are popular and get played cos
of the videos they make. it gets people into their music and
makes them STARS.

isn't it odd how not many IDM videos are played on MTV
(dunno about much music) do you think it contributes to a
lot of people NOT knowing more IDM musicians??? they barely
know Aphex and he's been around forever......

I think the 60's and 70's would've been totally different if
music videos existed then... it's true, people become
popular because of image, and not the music... it's pretty
sick... as far as IDM is concerned though, I don't really
think that it's not popular because it doesn't fit the
image... I just think maybe the music is too "extreme" to
fit in with the nice pop music that they play on mtv and
muchmusic... I mean, Windowlicker is quite a funny and
amusing video... very well done and all that! It's exactly
the type of video that would do well on tv I think, but the
song is not pop...

'IDM' isn't as underground as some will lead you to
believe...a lot of it is how you play with effects in a
music program, that's it. There used to be a cool show on
european mtv that played allsorts of electronica but it's
stopped now... 8 (

i DO think windowlicker is one of Aphex's more accessable
song. and the video is RAD!!!

i mean some of these artists make music for years and since
their vidoes are not played they don't get their
due.....exposure wise, etc...

i mean if you said Aphex, RDJ, or Squarepusher.....people
say who. what......you say Brittney and they can tell you
who she's dating.....it sucks

IMAGE = everything in music....it's a sad but true fact!

And Richard wouldn't be nearly as popular as he is had
Come To Daddy not made a few waves on MTV. Even
though it didn't get N'Sync type rotation, the little
exposure it got from the video was huge for an artist like
Aphex Twin.

damn........i'm not surprised he's still putting out
hits.......that song had me singing along and it's been
YEARS since i've heard it on the radio.....ahhahhah

the 'buggles' right? anyway he sure has a way with those POP
songs.....

jivver....why do you think it stopped. has it become less
popular in europe? it DOES seem to me that the europeans are
ahead of the game when it comes to this kind of music.....

ok.....here's another thought

i think in this day in age of music videos, etc
etc.......that

LOOKS = MUSIC career, more than

TALENT = MUSIC career

i think it's 50/50 look/talent......if not more
LOOKS......how sad is THAT!

bonus points if you bare you breasts or ass as much as
possible in videos!

heh, I watched a behind the music episode about 1979 or 1980
or something... anyways, it was the first year of MTV... and
they did say that the start of music television did mean the
end of some singers careers... and they mentioned that guy
who sang the song Sailing as one of the casulties... but
hey, maybe that's a good thing!! :)

change things so much? i guess the answer is YES

but it's crazy, cos these boy/girl bands and flesh revealing

went to the mall recently (i avoid them like the plague) i
saw stores selling lil kiddy clothes called TORRID, WET

kiddos......

loss of innocense is so sad, and they don't even realize it!

Well at least my nephew (and probably niece as well) are
getting exposure to good music, or at least different
music thanks to me. I try to play a little Aphex Twin here,
a little Autechre here... usually anything with a thumping

i saw a very trippy aphex twin video for schotkey 7th path
on mtv chillout zone once... surprised the shit out of me.
woke up at a friends house totally wasted and it was on, i
was like wtf, and then fell asleep again.

Also, Come to Daddy was played a HELL of a lot on mtv,
everyone in school was talking about the "scary" video that
was being shown on mtv, and also windowlicker's always on
that mtv x-rated show.

Apart from that though, i know what you're talking about..
But do we really want idm on tv and in the mainstream? I'm
happy with it where it is.. I'm glad it's not something
every shithead is into..

whats wrong with IDM being liked by the masses?? i don't
think you have the RIGHT attitude about music. why should it
be exclusive?

you want these guys to MAKE a living, make money, so they
can KEEP making more and more music. i don't think that RDJ
or any of the others would mind if people would sell out
music shoppes when their albums were released. don't be
fooled by those artists who say they don't wanna be popular,
not true. they would rather make some cash and have the
money to keep making music.

i like idm where it is too, LeCoeur. I think it's at such a
cool level of popularity. I like the way small labels
handle things themselves (how cool is it that toytronic is
run by gimmik and friends? or that autechre is at the top
of the skam foodchain?). it's fun to feel closer to the
music you listen to...that's something i don't really feel
when i listen to bjork because i am one in a million. if i
email trent reznor, he's not gonna get back to me. but say i
drop a note to crunch -- i might get a response. i agree,
good artists deserve recognition, but i think they get a lot
more out of small things when things are on a small scale.

and as for the money-making issue...i'm always going to be
the one to say you don't need money to make music. there
are plenty of musicians with jobs on the side. a lot of
people would love to do something they would perhaps
consider a hobby for a living...but not everyone can do it,
and i love when people understand this!

how ridiculous, through and through. sorry. seems a bit
selfish to me to want to keep "idm" artists in the back
corner of your pocket like that. it's the sort of elitist
attitude that keeps this music from gaining more popularity.

i feel that way too.

i often worry that we're doing the wrong thing by hiding our
music from mass populations, yet we rant about how corrupt
pop music is these days.

maybe one day the idm influence would spread like a
wildfire? who knows..?

all music should be shared, and who gives a damn of not
everyone likes a particular genre? there's something for
everybody out there!

couldn't disagree with you more. and i'm sure RDJ and other
IDM artists would prolly feel the same way.

ask an artist on this MB if he wouldn't LOVE to have his
music played on the radio, and his CD to sell 1000's of
copies, i'd be interested to see how many would say 'not me,
not me' i want my music to be heard by only a FEW people.

artists would prolly do anything to give up their 'side job'
to concentrate on MUSIC full time, who wants to do some
crappy job when you'd rather be creating art, or music.

the arguement just doesn't make sense!

btw....you're wrong about mr reznor as well. i'm sure if you
got thousands of fan emails gushing all over you wouldn't
answer, HOWEVER if you got a clever one, or something that
asked a serious or whimsicle question they'd answer. music
artists REALLY are just normal people, who ususally wanna be
treated as such.

just one other comment........

which is why i started this topic.

the videos that cunningham and rdj made are
fantastic.....like mini movies, it's a SHAME others have not
been able to see it. i mean they do all this work, not for
themselves, but for so others can get something out of it.

i really don't think that i am the shit for liking this kind
of music honestly...i don't think i have an elitist attitude
about the genre at all actually. sure, maybe it is a little
selfish of me to like feeling CLOSER to the artists i like,
but i don't think that's it's SUCH a terrible thing.

i like that when an idm show comes around, it isn't going to
be in an arena, and i'm actually going to be able to see the
stage (even if it is just knob twiddling ;-)). i like that
when funkstorung shows up in town, i am not going to have to
pay a ticket scalper a chunk of change to go see it.

i am not saying that the great artists out there dont
deserve recognition and even money. it is just my opinion
that being an artist full time is a luxury that most people
have no chance of getting.

with my previous post, i wasn't really trying to touch on
the fact that artists would love to reach a wide audience.
of course they would...it just seems less overwhelming the
way it is. i like that i get goodies like handpainted
pictures with shipments of records! i think it's wonderful
that everyone seems to know everyone else in this genre.
there are just so many cool things about idm the way it is
right now that i wouldn't mind terribley if it stayed like
this for a while...

i'll agree with you that intimacy in a live venue is very
important for this type of music, but i disagree with
everything you said before cos it's counter to everything
good about music and a slap in the face to artists who don't
want to have to work a full time job just so they can afford
to buy a couple synths. so many people already do, and more
importantly, WOULD love this style of music if they only
heard it.

that said, i think you clarified yourself pretty well though
mimi! i can identify with what you're saying even if i
fundamentally disagree on some major points.
