The media, especially the music press, need a "leader" of a
certain genre, to have a reference - because most of them
don't have a fucking clue what they're talking about.

But there was a time, when there was just RDJ.

aphex is my fave electronic artist of all time but i don't
think he's the best.. he really does have insanely good PR,
maybe it's all fallen in his lap so to speak or maybe it's
calculated, but the aphex twin marketing is pure genius..
combine that with his musical brilliance (challenge me
otherwise on this) and that's why to so many of us he seems
like such a god. it also helps that a lot of you don't
listen to much else...

well lets see, I think there are a few main reasons for his
success above and beyond other great electronic artists!!

First there is his persona... there are so many stories and
rumors and all that going on about him, that it just makes
him interesting... you hear about SAW85-92 and how he
recorded some of it at age 14, and you're interested in
hearing it to see if it's any good... and all the other
rumors that you hear about when you research about his
stuff... so yeah, all this stuff makes him interesting!!

Then, there is his music... personally I think his music is
pretty poppy... relative to Autechre say... I think his
killer melodies, along with his great production skills make
his music poppier then other stuff... now, because of his
use of manic percussion and lack of vocals you ain't gonna
hear it on the radio, or see it on tv, but still... and
really, I think Aphex is really just a step below major
popularity... it seems that for anyone getting into IDM,
he's the first one to start with, so he's fairly well
known...

also, he's been around for ages... a little longer then
Autechre I guess, as far as releases go, so it can probably
be argued that Autechre were influenced by Aphex Twin, and
not the other way around...

it's definitely not all from his music though... he's done
an excellent job of marketing himself, whether it has been
planned or not, and that has played a major role I think...

come on tits... I am sure we all listen to lots of diferent
stuff... maybe not thousands like you but some hundreds at
least

we all got here after a long music trip across many varied
genres... why do you think some of us just listen to him?

look at the now playing thread... its obvious that the great
% of posts are about aphex but there is tons of diferent
music there.

Funk_master:
your post was a nice summary of many dispersed ideas we all
had in our minds and posted in this thread but needed to be
put together

so we have his persona, the mistery around him and his
aliases, the marketing he uses (his face and logo) his
varied and high quality music, his skills for melody, the
interests of media itself, his good friends (cunningham,
glass...)...

astounded by this enigma, i wanted to know who or what he

mystery has gone sadly

ok, here is another example of what I am talking about
richard:

what happened in the bjork concert. all the bjork fans were
totally pissed off by his set... and we just love that it
happened that way... we were missing his crazyness and the
way he is watched as a strange mad man by the rest of the
music scene

i haven't anything to say that hasn't already been said but
i do think it has to do with the face + the music. but not
just his face, it's the mask of his face, smile and all,
that catches people attention. then the music just blows
your mind!

if his marketing would be capable...he would be the most
popular artist on the planet...he's not even close to that

His music isn't acceptable enough for everyone to be the
most popular on this planet.

definitely not all his music but there are plenty of his
tunes that people who are not into electronic music seem to
like very much...ofcourse i was exaggerating saying he'd be
the most poopular guy, but definitely a lot more people
would know about him

if his music were played on radio all time 24/7... then I am
sure millions and millions of people would like it

Maybe, I'm not sure. I mean, when I'm at home playign
druckqs most of my family members don't know what f*ck's
going on. Maybe it's because they're not used to it or so.
I agree that he has off course more accesible material than
that, but i'm not sure wether everyone would like it.

"which is difficult, cos idm fans usually look for the
unknown artist, the non popular ones... we dont like feeling

fans of a popular band... we like to feel like an elite "

its always down to MUSIC for me (no matter how popular one
is)

remember tolstoyed?

Correct, no matter how popular for instance radiohead (a
band frequently listened to by me) gets, as long as the
music is good, I'll listen to it.

If Britney Spears would make a good song for my taste (now
this is very unlikely to happen, maybe it's my taste) then I
will listen to it.

hehe, yeah, i had a feeling you might ask that...i mean i
would be turned off of his music if i'd be listening to it
24/7...every time i'd turn on the radio and hear his
tune...perhaps it would work the first 10 years but i think
i'd get tired after that

and i would love to see more apreciation from people for
rdjs music-that wouldnt put me off at all!
:D
