Could anyone explain to me how can a recording material leak from a studio, like in radiohead's case.
Not only that, now the mastered material is online.
I don't think too many people have access and knowledge of operating tape decks and/or computers where the material is stored.
Intended commercial trick? How can a band profit off of that? Any ideas?

Well bands have to send out promo copies to journo's to get reviews out before the album is released. That is one reason.

yeah and they probably make cd's if not for their own use then to give to people they know.
you'd have to try the cd on different soundsystems, to see if you've missed anything in the mixing.

i think they usually intend to put it on the web...they (in some cases) dont put the right/final version out...
and also to raise expectations imo

in the case of radiohead, it was really stolen during studio work, they are totally disgusted about the thief (hail...) stealing something unfinished...
