To me, there are two kinds of lyrics, in a general sense...
there are personal lyrics, stories about personal
experiences... and then there are lyrics where the artist
talks about something separate from themselves... you know,
I much prefer the first type... if I know that a singer is
singing about something that has happened in their life, I
just connect with them more... for instance, most of the
lyric albums I love are like this... Peter Gabriel, who had
started out writing mostly about situations and characters
other then himself, release the album Us, and I just love
that album... it's all about his relationships, his
troubles, his pains... the same with Beck and his Sea Change
album... I just think it's more personal...

what does everyone think?

i dont know. it depends what mood i'm in.

If i'm out dancing and having fun..Cylobian lyrics like
"Rock the house" and "Drop the Bass" are spot on, most other
times, thoughtful, personal lyrics that i can identify with
personal experience.

hehe, yeah I was thinking that... technically there are
lyrics though, but do they even mean anything? :)

I don't care anyways, they sound beautiful whatever they
are,...

I prefer abstract lyrics, where at first glance there just
seems to be no logic or substance in it at all until you
start unraveling it piece by piece.

I like abstraction in lyrics as well... but I prefer lyrics
that are personal, but abstract as well so you can apply it
to your own situations and relate... but, I do like all
kinds of lyrics if they're done right...

in general, lyrics i can relate to, or which are very
emotional to me... (12 Rounds - Barbed Wire Hair; The The -
TheWhisperers...)

i like senseless crazy lyrics too, but i prefer the ones i
can relate to...

and some lyrics with good plays on words... and some who
could make a story... (Einstürzende Neubauten's track "Haus
der Lüge" is a great example of both, playing on the words
'geschoss' (floor), 'schoss' (knees), 'geschossen' (shoot),
and describing the "house of lies", this song alone is a
masterpiece)

one of my favorite songs that tells a nice story, well I
should say makes a nice statement, is San Jacinto by Peter
Gabriel... it's basically about native americans, and how
the white man stole their land I believe... I like the way
the lyrics are written, and the music is great as well...

yes, I love PEter Gabriel... I want to make love to him!!

I like close straight-forward lyrics about the hardship of
man. Abstract lyrics are poo.
Nick Drake and Ryan Adams are good lyricists IMO. And
"Helpless" by The Bear Quartet is ace!

var med honom.
sprutnarkoman i Stockholm.

Gibberish lyrics are what I seem to like most... Syd
Barrett, later Beatles, Robyn Hitchcock, etc. Weird stuff.

And I agree with Dobbin... Ray Davies sticks SO much wit
into his lyrics. It's rarely too serious, but there's always
a scathing message or something in there.

i gotta agree there.
i think some of the most powerful and emotion-expressing
singing could be considered just "vocal-noise" and not
words.. sometimes making the singing have a literal meaning
takes away from the expression.
