Are they original CD's you have bought fom the shop? If
this is the case then it is probably the new copy protection
stuff.

Does your CD drive read data CDs?

And why you play an audio CD do the software players refuse
to play the files, or does it appear to play but without any
sound?

ok, check your cable connections from the soundcard to the
speakers, check your speakers (maybe swap them with others,
or headphones to check they've not got knackered). Check the
volume/properties in the sound mining control panel thing.
Perhaps check that the cable that connects the DVD drive to
the soundcard (internally) hasn't popped out somehow
(unlikely, but you never know).

Well I'm stumped. If it was working fine two days ago, then
stopped, you must've done something to change it around that
time. Maybe something was installed/uninstalled/reconfigured
that screwed windows a bit?

nothing that i can think of...but i havent reinstalled
windows for at least a year now - so perhaps its not that
weird :)
