You've got to be shitting me

A comedy album recorded by Cassius Clay (Muhammed Ali) in
1963...

As the 20th century winds down, it's time to honor all the
true greats who have inhabited its time frame. Certainly one
of those deserving a tip of the hat is Muhammad Ali, who
single-handedly changed boxing and how African-Americans
were treated in that sport. He stands as a model of black
pride, a person who stood by his beliefs no matter the
cost. But turn back the clock to the early 1960s and Muhammad
Ali was Cassius Clay, a loudmouthed prize fighter who was
making headlines by outrageous behavior both in and out of
the ring. He recited poetry, yammered on incessantly about
how pretty he was, and made with the promo noise not unlike
that of a modern day WWF wrestler. It was big enough news
back then that Columbia Records had him record an entire
album of his poetry for public consumption. Hey, if the
Bickersons sold, maybe this big-mouthed boxing kid would
too.The result is like listening to almost any other early
'60s comedy album because, racial pride aside, that's
exactly how this album was viewed and sold back then. Clay
runs through a set of his poems with varied musical backing
and an audience to laugh and applaud in all the right spots.
Those of you old enough to remember Ali verbally sparring
with Howard Cosell will hear those seeds sown right here. I
Am the Greatest is one of the strangest reissues to come
down the pike in ages, but a marvelous souvenir of a simpler
time in America's history''

AND... he performed Ben E. King's ''Stand by Me'' on
this weirdo compilation.

Has anyone heard either of these? I want that comedy one,
Ali was one clever sunnamabitch.

''Cassius Clay floated like a butterfly and stung like a bee
in the ring and also does a credible job in the studio on
Ben E. King's classic "Stand by Me," from his 1966 I Am the
Greatest album on Columbia Records. Cut the vociferous boxer
some slack for not holding notes well and the monotone
delivery. Still, it's a favorite among collectors; a good
copy sells for more than 20 dollars, a good price for a
record that's not all that rare. CBS released the single on
two separate occasions. The flipside was, of course, "I'm
the Greatest." — Andrew Hamilton''

I have the first track, and it's a riot... spoken word,
here's his ''poem'' (I'm typing it as I hear it):

I AM THE GREATEST!

This is the legend of Cassius Clay/the most beautiful
fighter in the world today

He talks a great deal and brags indeedy!/of a muscular punch
that's INCREDIBLY speedy!

The fistic world (?) was dull and weary/with a champ like
Liston(?), things HAD to be dreary

Then someone with color, someone with dash/brought fightfans
RUNNING with cash

This kid fights great, he's got speed and endurance/but if
you sign to fight up, increase your insurance!

This kid's got a left, this kid's got a right/if he hits you
once, you're asleep for the night!

Here I predict, Mr. Liston's dismemberment/I'll hit him so
hard, he'll wonder where October and November went!

etc etc, it's so stupid and funny, lots of goofy macho
posturing, ripe with sampling opportunities. He IS the
greatest.
