Man cuts arm off

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The climber who amputated his own
arm to free himself from beneath a boulder had no other
choice if he wanted to survive, one of his rescuers said
Friday.

Aron Ralston, 27, of Aspen would have died had he stayed
where he was, in remote Blue John Canyon near Canyonlands
National Park in the far southwestern Utah, Emery County
sheriff's Sgt. Mitch Vetere told NBC's "Today" show.

Ralston, described by authorities as an avid outdoorsman in
exceptional physical condition, was in serious condition
late Thursday at a hospital in Grand Junction, Colo.

Vetere said two other rescuers who returned to the canyon in
hopes of retrieving the limb discovered that the boulder
weighed 1,000 pounds, not the 200 that they first believed.
They were unable to retrieve the arm.

Using a pocketknife, Ralston cut off his right arm below the
elbow and applied a tourniquet and administered first aid.
He then rigged anchors, fixed a rope and rappelled 60 feet
to the canyon floor.

Could you do this?

well, he must've been in a hell of a lot of pain already
because, quite clearly, his arm must've already been
squished..

situation like that...

he broke the bones, so he didn't have to try to cut through
them...

read the whole article, it explains his story in great
detail.

yeah, just saw him on tv.

he explained quite calmly and cooly how he turned and
shifted his arm until the bones gave way at his wrist.

No, it's not fun...but it isn't particularly special either.
When it is a matter of survival you are capable of doing
almost anything. There are stories of people who have
knawed their own limbs off, never mind a pen knife.

so the level of gore involved is key???

what about just losing the use of your right arm? i think to
musicians this would be a big deal... or an artist... anyone
who is right handed.

No, but it was a matter of self preservation, I would have
been impressed if he sacrificed his arm to save someone
else. But anyone in that situation would do the same.

some places in africa people get choped their limbs off
every day (for minor offences)...no one really cares about
that...

Someone I don't know had to cut their own arm off to survive
in a place I know nothing about doing a risky sport of his
own choice...

I have the news on and it is showing kids with arms and legs
missing...blown off during bombing raids from an unjust
war...it is all about priorities, you can't feel sorry for
everyone.

probably take the knife to my jugular before I took it to my

This guy was in phenomenal shape and had a lot of savvy...
even if I DID have the guts to chop my arm off, I don't know
if I COULD actually physically do it with the $5 knife he
had.

if you cut the tendons and remove the skin from around the
