is IDM a boys club ?

Apart from the 2 guys and a girl, run-of-the-mill
trip-hop(sic) bands Sneaker Pimps/Moloko/Lamb, Mira Calix is
the only female artist that I know of that actively makes
electronic music. Why is that ? Any opinions ?

If you can call Sneaker Pimps, Moloko and Lamb IDM, then I
guess Madonna is another female you can add to the list. And
Björk.

Erm, you've not heard of Leila? Excellent female "IDM"
artist. I think if anything girls have it a bit easier in
IDM as they're seen as a novelty.

occfactor... notice I said trip-hop(sic) bands Sneaker
Pimps/Moloko/Lamb
...I meant specifically female artists
that compose electronic music.

Ceri, the term "IDM" is not mine...specifically I meant
female artists that compose their own music... electronic to
be precise. I can see what you mean, but the scene has
rarely determined who makes it and who does not. People like
Laura Nyro, Joni Mitchell, Tina Turner and Patti Smith did
not approach the industry when they were being welcomed with
open arms.

First Album, "Like Weather" is on Rephlex, her follow up
(forget the name) is on XL. Good soul/rnb/idm hybrid. 3
different singers.

She used to play keyboard for bjork.

Just found out about her...apparently on Rephlex and an
erstwhile member of Bjork's support crew. Two albums so
far...
Like Weather and Courtesy of Choice, the former on rephlex
and the latter on XL. Four singles, 3 on Rephlex and one on
XL. Not much released since 2000. Am talking about the same
person ?

she also produces. Also: Miss Kittin. And for the drum n
bass fans there's always DJ Rap.........!

I guess not...there are enough female DJs...not to diss
those that spin records...but I guess electronic music
composition is an altogether different story from beat
matching records. That does require talent, but a differnt
kind of talent... I was thinkingmore in terms of a female
Aphex/Ae/Plaid/Squarepusher... Mira Calix, Bjork and now
Leila seem to be the only ones around. Vocalists for 2 guys
and a girl bands like Portishead do not count. That rules
out Beth Gibbons, Liz Frasier, Louise Rhodes and the ilk...

i never thought of bjork as idm or electronic in the
slightest way, shes just a singer (?)

Yeah she was until homogenic...but seeing as Vespertine was
produced by her to a large extent...and the beats on that
were both hers and Matmos'...I would say maybe she
fits...just about...not like the other two...but atleast she
is a far cry from the lady from the Sneaker Pimps or
something. Also, she had the good taste to sample
Oval...work with Matmos and Mark Bell and now has
Squarepusher with her on her live tour dates. That pretty
much puts her in the thick of thinghs...don't you think ?

herself....if you can point me to her most idmish least
vocal stuff ill be happy to buy it...

Lektro girl does produce, pretty weak IMO, although I've
only heard a few tracks by her.

Whilst I like Ms. Kittin I'd hardly class her as IDM. DJ Rap
is a great DJ, not sure if she produces though.

offline alnuit on 2003-05-09 07:08 [#00691055]

Well...she makes electronic music, that is dance
oriented...which is truckloads better than the
'pop-a-4/4-on-top-of-a-phat-bassline' kinda run of the mill
stuff... and well, when a gener has a name as corny as
IDM... if it is DM in anyway...the I part of it is pretty
much subjective, isn't it ?
