From Salon.com: Pete Townshend was cleared Wednesday of possessing pornographic images of children. But The Who guitarist was warned by police not to access a Web site containing images of child abuse. Townshend was arrested in January on suspicion of making and possessing indecent images of children. The arrest was part of Operation Ore, an FBI-led crackdown on Internet child pornography. After a four-month investigation, London's Metropolitan Police said Wednesday that the rocker "was not in possession of any downloaded child abuse images," but had accessed a site containing such images in 1999. The musician acknowledged using his credit card to enter a Web site advertising child pornography but said he was doing research for his autobiography. The title character in Townshend's rock opera "Tommy" -- a deaf, dumb and blind pinball wizard -- is sexually abused by an uncle, and Townshend said he believed he had been sexually abused as a young boy, while in the care of his mentally ill grandmother. Police said it was not a defense "to access these images for research or out of curiosity." As part of the cautioning procedure, Townshend's fingerprints, photograph and a DNA sample will be taken by police, and he will be placed on a national register of sex offenders for five years. |

What image? The guy's a 75-year-old has-been with a receding hair line i.e. nothing left to live for. Is it really true that your nose never stops growing? |

He is not innocent otherwise he would not have been cautioned or placed on the register. The fact the police chose not to proceed with this doesn't alter the fact that he purchased access to a web site containing pictures of serious child abuse. There where plenty of places he could have gone to get information without helping to fund this sick obsession some people have. |

But if you support it, in my opinion, you are as bad as the person who commits the crime. And your argument doesn't hold up because you are talking about two situations involving the active and willing participation of grown adults. |

yes i'm just playing devils advocate - but ithere are lots of situations wher the people involved don't have willing participation in being looked at in horrific situations. the main issue might be whether you activley look for images of people in these situations - but it might even come down to something more personal than that - what you feel when you look at these images - that would bde the deciding factor in rehabilitating someone who feels the need to act on the images anyway ... |
