Really, can pure instrumental music ever reach the same emotional highs as a good lyric sung by a great voice? I've had the opinion that pure instrumental music is more open to interpretation, and can be full of emotion and all that... but I really find there is nothing like a beautiful lyric with a beautiful melody... I even find sometimes that I get so touched by a vocal song, but I don't even pay attention to the lyrics if you know what I mean... like I'll listen to the song, and sing along, but I won't think about the lyrics... yet it'll touch me deeply... with some songs I don't take the lyrics as a whole, but just pay close attention to individual lines that I find particularly powerful... I guess it's something to do with a person singing, and baring their souls that is just innately emotional...
what's everyones opinions about this?

ive pondered this many a time - and it seems that i feel that instrumental music is much more personal that lyrics can be - an instrumental lets you interpret your own thoughts and feelings into the music - creating your own song, or lyrics in your head - a collection of your own ideas and emotions.

I think the reason that people enjoy vocal music is because its so immediate.. . its instantly identifiable (which if you take all current trends in shit tv you should agree) and gratifing.. . honestly I think people like indulging themselves in themselves (even if they cant sing themselves).. . personally I like vocal music without lyrics or foreign music where the lyrics just cant be understood until you go looking for a translation or something.. . when its like that the voice just becomes a multitimbred instrument.. . and honestly.. . the types of sounds it can produce are just amazing. ..

Personally I enjoy instrumental music more, but there are some vocal songs that really kick my ass.
Hey does Amon Tobins "verbal" count as an instrumental or a vocal piece ? ;D

I have two distinct listening moods, one where I WANT lyrics and one where I don't. I have no idea what sets each mood off.
I'm really picky and dumb lyrics or a less than flattering voice can really ruin it for me... or make it a totally orgiastic experience.
All my favorite music has vocals though.

well, I enjoy all those types of music that you mentioned there... pure instrumental, vocal music with no lyrics, and lyrical music... but I don't know, sometimes I just find it extremely intimate and touching when a singer bares his/her soul through music... for instance, Sea Change by Beck is one of the most beautiful and touching albums I've heard in sometime... Us by Peter Gabriel is the same... both albums are about hurt and pain and all that, and the lyrics and singing is just so amazing... I don't know, I guess it's two different things really... at least I find that... I find instrumental music good because it's open to interpretation, and can be used for feelings from an type of situation... whereas lyrical songs may be specifically about one thing, and thus is not going to be as good to me in other situations... but if I listen to a lyrical song that is about a situation almost identical to one I'm experiencing, there is nothing like it... it's almost like the singer is singing to me then... it just depends for me I guess...

That used to be the argument for synthesized music, range timbre/tone etc. 'lyrics that can't be understood' is similar to a noise that is created a new way 'granular', 'additive' synthesis etc...

The vast majority of the music that I listen to is instrumental. That said, good lyrics or a good voice can't be topped. It's just there's so many *bad* singers and dumb lyrics out there.

I enjoy music with and without vocals. But with vocals you add a real personal thing to any song that you can't add otherwise. I really love live recordings with a good singer, that puts in emotion. I love the poetry that lyrics to a song can be, I also love the fact that you can write about anything you want, like personal things, but also political things (sundag bloody sunday by U2 as an example).

i take it that people who dont particularily like lyrics, dont like Bob Dylan or the Beatles then :)
I like instrumental music and vocal music the same, i think.
for example: All bluesby Miles Davis is really "hair raising" (as in back of the neck),but so can all vocalmusic

i like music with vocals, eg samples...but as for actual *singing* i can almost never find any emotion in it, it always makes me picture the singer, whereas instrumental can be pure music, i can concentrate on emotions...
