unreleased records

sometimes you read through a labels' list of releases (like
the one that comes with the Braindance coincidence) and you
see a number with 'unreleased' where the title should be,
and posibly the artist name...why is that! if they only made
a few copys to give to friends, why through the label?

Perhaps a record got to the test pressing stage, they canned
it and didn't release it and the few test pressings were
distributed?

No, but typically after the "test pressing" is the last
stage you can pullout (without heavy losses) when making a
record. It'd explain why there were only 4 copies of AB5 (it
costs a hell of a lot per record to just have 4 copies made,
especially as real records as opposed to dub plates).

Occassionally some records are made in very limited
quantities as promotion for an artist/label.

isn't unreleased music obsession cool? *said
half-sarcastically*

i'm working on a webpage all about unreleased NIN tracks. i
already have one about unreleased radiohead tracks. i hope joyrex
develops some more detailed FAQ-style sections on aphex over
at WATMM because there's a lot of unreleased stuff to talk
about besides the usual CW album, q-chastic EP, AB5, etc.

tits: The FAQ for Aphex is up (albiet the old, out of date
one - I need someone or myself to update it and correct the
inaccuracies).

Ceri: AB5 wasn't limited to 4 copies, that was the Caustic
Window Album (CAT023) that Grant, Richard, Mike P and Cylob
own. AB5 was probably less than 50 copies, as most pressing
houses do anywhere from 20-30 at the most for vinyl pressing
to ensure quality control and for promo purposes.

That would explain why he's happy to give them to people.
Not on a regular occasion though. don't you own a copy of
AB5 Joyrex?

Yes, I own a copy, I know another guy who owns one
autographed by Richard himself, and one recently went on
Ebay for 1800USD, making it the most expensive AFX
non-release yet.

I'm working on the Aphex watmm discog at the moment (nothing
to see, so don't bother clicking), and hopefully my discog
format will clear things up for people who weren't around in
the "good old days" when this stuff was available and
information about it was plentiful.

right, there's a lot of interesting info missing.. that's
what i'm sayin'

maybe in the discog section you can mention not only
releases and test pressings but also planned and cancelled
releases, remixes, and appearences like on coil's site.
