OK, My notes are a fucking mess so I advise you to go to you local library and get hold of a copy of "Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice 2nd edition in C" by Foley, van Dam,Feiner and Hughes. (Addison Wesley). Chapter 20 has a fairly good section on fractals.
Otherwise you could always check "3D Computer Graphics, 3rd. Ed." by A.H.Watt or "Procedural Elements for Computer Graphics" by D.F.Rogers.
If you're really desperate I can scan the appropriate sections from these texts and email them to you. Let me know.

All I know is that there was a documentary on quite a while ago about fractals, and David Gilmore did the soundtrack.
There were a few interviews with scientific mumbo jumbo, but most of the time they showed these fractals evolving with this cool music.
I was with a bunch of friends, and we got stoned and absolutely loved it.

Fractals are only a simple way to arrange geometric shapes, according to scaling symmetry. The idea was created for math purposes because before it was seemingly difficult to describe the structure nature is composed in using simple, or regular math, traditional math I guess. But mandelbrot and probably others realized that nature often seems to compose itself in nested patterns. For example if you cut a secondary branch, or a branch off of this off of a tree and stand it upright in the ground, it often looks just like a typical tree (except for, say the leaves, which is a reminder that probably no fractals nest forever), only smaller. All you have to remember is scaling symmetry, symmetry alone is interesting to read about too. Take a triangle, shrink it by some percent of the original, and paste it to each side, repeat with the smaller versions, repeat repeat.
There is some really complex weird fractal art that uses some sort of equation to compute the visual data or something. I'm not quite sure how that works, but it's works in a similar way.

You can't exactly picture it, because human brains work in 3 dimensions. That's why fractals are such a relatively new thing (first worked out in the 60's or 70's or somethin'). But with elementary particles, like bosons, fermions, etc. particles can have a fractional 'spin' of say, one and a half. Meaning, you have to rotate it one and a half times before it is back to how it was before.

nah, you're wrong with the spin thingy that has nothing to do with that. the fractal dimension is something like the 'density' of points belonging to the fractal in a space of the next higher dimension, let's say you have a 2 dimensional fractal, then 1.9 says that it almost covers the plane.

The maths is relatively simple if you're comfortable with reiteration. Of course you can do some pretty hardcore maths on them but to get them isn't too hard..
I'd suggest you start looking at straightforward fractals like Sierpinski's Triangle. The mandlebrot set is an iteration on the complex plane. Basically you take a point in the C-plane, iterate with the proper equation and colour that point depending on it's behaviour as you take the iteration to infininty. If the point goes to zero in the limit you colour it black, else you colour it according to how quickly it goes to infinity (the colour scheme is arbitrary). I wanted to do my maths honours on fractal geometry but apparently mathematicians aren't very interested in it anymore and hence aren't interested in supervising hnrs theses on the topic....
