since i know there are a lot of bedroom djs or artists or
idmists or(etc... whatever) on here

how many of u tend to use non 4/4 time signatures? or
combinations?
i tend to work w/ 5 and 7 a lot, and i like throwing
triplets, quintuplets, and septuplets into it when i can.

septuplet is one beat in a measure that has 7 beats. Sept =
7

septuplets, that i have heard, always have to be fast to
sound good... so it would have to be like a 16th note hi-hat
speed.

change much, it's the relative interaction that counts,

one fun thing is not sticking to the bars, so you could have
it set up in 4/4, but make one bar 3beats, the next 3beats
but thte 3rd 2beats long, or something.

I like experimenting with time signatures too tho...

check out Dave Brubeck's album "Time out" :)

actually, a triplet is 3 notes over two beats... hence the
TRIPLET, meaning three...

offline Omneignotumus on 2003-05-02 16:21 [#00681810]

A triplet involves dividing a single note or rhythmic unit
with a duration of 1 beat into three seperate units which
are all played in the space of that one beat. ie if you were
playing straight quarter notes in 4/4; you would have four
notes in succession per bar. Keeping the same tempo and
meter, you could convert any or all of the notes to triplets
by dividing them each into three units whose sum duration
equals that of the quarternote. Its a really common rhythmic
device in classic rock guitar solos. An example would be
Jimmy Page's break in the song "Good times Bad Times" off
Zeppelin I.

I don't know anything about time signatures besides 4/4 and
3/4. A famous song that incorporates them both seamlessly is
We Can Work it Out! Hip hip hooray!

if u have reason u could make 1 4/4 bar 16 notes, than make
20 on the next (carrying on into the next) then simply
multiply it by 125% (change events/alter tempo) from there
it's easy to go to any time signature and they'll still fit
in the same amount of space- hence u can do progressive time
signatures, only, they sound a bit choppy when u start
out... have to learn methods of similar patterns to
implement to make it stick togather

oh and btw, incorporating 4/4 and 3/4 is simplicity in and
of itself, u don't even need math, just do the standard
1231231&2&

offline diemax from somewhere in tennessee :( (United States) on 2003-05-02 17:57 [#00681953]

and so u know, u basically just described what isaid only
slightly differently, when ur thinking of 'beats' u mean,
8th notes, but a beat (as in bpm) is a 4th note, which is
where u had your problem

what's the range of speed on a turntable? when djing could
you, for instance, throw a record on twice the speed as
would be proper?

check 'south african man' by Hamilton Bohannon, it's in 9/8
time or whatever it is but.......you can dance to it like a
disco track. When you're feeling it, it just rides! Like
'Take five' it's the perfect thing to get you into playing
with time signatures.

Hamilton Bohannon also laid out the blueprint for Chic etc
for funk/disco to be universal and still stay credible.

well that one is easy to count out... the whole song is
basically a repeating pattern, and each pattern counts 7
beats... so each pattern is 7 beats...

and really, another way to look at it is that each time the
pattern repeats, the lyrics take up 4 beats, and bare music
takes up the other 3...

beat with 3 quavers in it.

if you analyse it further by really clutching those
buttocks, you'd realize that the bridge is a 3 then a 4, and
the verse is a 4 and a 3
