since i know there are a lot of bedroom djs or artists or idmists or(etc... whatever) on here
how many of u tend to use non 4/4 time signatures? or combinations?
i tend to work w/ 5 and 7 a lot, and i like throwing triplets, quintuplets, and septuplets into it when i can.

septuplets, that i have heard, always have to be fast to sound good... so it would have to be like a 16th note hi-hat speed.

one fun thing is not sticking to the bars, so you could have it set up in 4/4, but make one bar 3beats, the next 3beats but thte 3rd 2beats long, or something.
I like experimenting with time signatures too tho...
check out Dave Brubeck's album "Time out" :)

A triplet involves dividing a single note or rhythmic unit with a duration of 1 beat into three seperate units which are all played in the space of that one beat. ie if you were playing straight quarter notes in 4/4; you would have four notes in succession per bar. Keeping the same tempo and meter, you could convert any or all of the notes to triplets by dividing them each into three units whose sum duration equals that of the quarternote. Its a really common rhythmic device in classic rock guitar solos. An example would be Jimmy Page's break in the song "Good times Bad Times" off Zeppelin I.

if u have reason u could make 1 4/4 bar 16 notes, than make 20 on the next (carrying on into the next) then simply multiply it by 125% (change events/alter tempo) from there it's easy to go to any time signature and they'll still fit in the same amount of space- hence u can do progressive time signatures, only, they sound a bit choppy when u start out... have to learn methods of similar patterns to implement to make it stick togather

check 'south african man' by Hamilton Bohannon, it's in 9/8 time or whatever it is but.......you can dance to it like a disco track. When you're feeling it, it just rides! Like 'Take five' it's the perfect thing to get you into playing with time signatures.
Hamilton Bohannon also laid out the blueprint for Chic etc for funk/disco to be universal and still stay credible.

well that one is easy to count out... the whole song is basically a repeating pattern, and each pattern counts 7 beats... so each pattern is 7 beats...
and really, another way to look at it is that each time the pattern repeats, the lyrics take up 4 beats, and bare music takes up the other 3...
