In short, do you feel that the quality of Plaid's work has gone down since the days they were in The Black Dog ? Frankly, I feel that tracks like Abla Edio, Gel Lab, Eyen, Ladyburst and the Vletrmx remix prove that they still have tne knack.

wow, not too many people that share that opinion. I love Plaid too., if only for the reason that they can make accessible music that is still incredibly complex...and that is quite a challenge. But The Black Dog still have a reputation that is hard to shake.

The Black Dog were quite cult in their day. Although Plaid are cool, there was more mystery behind The Black Dog which made the whole band very intrigueing.

i certainly have found less to appreciate in rest proof and double figure (i'm one of the few that didn't like the last album at all), though the autechre remix and diddymousedid from the last ep were fantastic. as much as i've enjoyed plaid, i think their best work with black dog is more timeless. black dog since plaid left (at least everything i've heard) has not been worth hearing. i liked the imagery and mysticism that ken brought to the table, but it seems clear that plaid were the sound innovators of the trio.

Sounds/Feeling etc. they worked well together. Plaid are really submissive and Ken is a cunt! if only they worked well together again properly......
it's not going to happen but hopefully plaid will re-find their roots.

every once in a while i break out my black dog c.d's but i have never really liked them too much. too midi sounding. of course they didn't have the same technology then but even then i didn't really care for them. i did like some of the stuff they did with bjork though.

Yeah, I guess it was all that Egyptian iconography that kept the mystery and intrigue of Black Dog intact. And admittedly that added a lot to the band's now legendary stature. And now when I listen to their music, I feel the same timelessness that comes through in old Detroit stuff by May and Atkins (Strings Of Life/ Clear/ Nude Photo). And in that sense I respect them. I guess it just that I wasn't around when it first happened, so I am not able to see the huge impact they made in their day. Ed and Andy rock. Ken downie is a ****. The solo "Ken as Black Dog" work is just shite.

I like Black Dog better than Plaid.
I would rank all the Black Dog and Plaid albums (that I have) thusly:
1. Black Dog "Spanners"
2. Plaid "Rest Proof Clockwork"
3. Black Dog "Bytes"
4. Black Dog "Peel Session"
5. Plaid "Double Figure"
6. Plaid "Not for Threes"
7. Black Dog "Temple of Transparent Balls"
8. Plaid "Spokes"
9. Black Dog "Parallel"

Plaid are bit boring, imo, compared to the original Black Dog. I love Bytes the most, Parallel, The Peel Session and The Black Dog Productions EP on Rising High with Flux and Otaku. I really like "Music for Adverts" too, i think that has some ace tracks. But Plaid, i don't think they've gone anywhere, they sound like watered down Black Dog. Which is, i guess, what they are.

Thinking back now....I like Plaid better, but only because there the only artist out there that can release an album and I pretty much like every damn song on it. The Black Dog are hard to top....they are very influential. As much as I love The Black Dog....I feel Ed's solo work as Balil from TBD era is the best sound the three of them had to offer. It'd be interesting to know who worked on which tracks throughout their career since they were a collective and most tracks were creditied to TBD. I believe the three of them worked together making tracks only on the Virtual EP.

although plaid certainly developed considerately since their break up with the black dog, i prefer their early work as the black dog. i still have a sense of discovering new things when listening to spanners or bytes. their plaid albums however tend to wear out easily. perhaps its indeed the (egyptian) mysticism that's lacking. but when talking about mysticism, i'm glad boc stood up and took the candle from the black dog.
and about ed's solo work; a while ago someone mentioned of having an unreleased balil-album!!!!! speak up goddammit!!!!
share the motherfucker
