I haven't read the Julien Cope book, but i heard an interview with Thom Yorke [and i usually trust his opinion] saying that when you read it, you feel really inspired to go out and listen to these bands, but some of them are a bit disapointing..
like i heard Amon Duul II, and there not that great. Im a fan of Tangerine Dreams 'Zeit' though..

Well I like Phaedra a lot but I would say Tangerine Dream beyond 74 were shits. Stay clear of TG beyond Rubicon everything else is worth a shot. Phaedra has a very unique analogue sound. I think TG went a bit cheezo beyond a certain point. Can, Neu! and La Dusseldorf (spun out of Neu!) basically did good quality grooves and were never really cheesy.

Yeah Amon Duul II, shit completely forgot about them. I tell you at one time my sister and I were completely obsessed with Krautrock. We were going out and hunting down all the old vinyl. My sister has about 3 Amon Duul II records. I remember one of them being pretty ok but the others were a bit spooky wooky with sort of sounds with lots of reverb. I mean they're okay but you know they're a bit deranged a bit too hippy zippy.

I think for shear quality I'd rate Neu! as number 1. I think the Kraut battle was tightly fought between Neu!, Can and Kraftwerk. I think old Kraftwerk came out top, with Can second and Neu! third.
Anyone ever been to Kosmische in London?

what about Popol Vuh?
Although i sort of lost my patience with 'In Den Gärten Pharaos', i DO think they have done some excellent film scores..for Werner Herzog in particular

I would say that Venetians Snares has actually brought a bit of the Kraut and Kosmische feel to his music which is a good thing.

Neu! and The Residents(though technically not 'krautrock') are my favorites.. I plan on picking up the ! reissues soon. Has anyone ever heard Volcano the Bear? Their album 'The Inhazer Decline' is full of brain-bubbling goodness.. Currently signed to Steven Stapleton's United Dairies label - recommended.

I really like some tracks on Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi and Future Days...but personally I find Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk and Neu more accessible. Can and Faust were like bleeding edge then...and have stayed that way since...
