I've said this before, but in my opinion the greatest is:
Fear Of A Black Planet - Public Enemy.

Really that RZA album is good? Come on? I'll have to hear
it.

The best hip hop album of all time is:
Nas Illmatic

the rza album isn't good compared to all the other
94-97-and-a-few-other wu solos. liquid swords is just the
best though. flawless. in stereo's generally considered
better than digital bullet, too, as far as bob digi goes.
digital bullet has great songs like build strong though. ah.

slept on album by Rass Kass

EB & R - Paid In full
NWA - 100 miles and running
or
EPMD - Strictly Business

from what i've heard it's just really creative take on the
same pathetic lyrical theme:

"i'm the better rapper,
you must believe i'm the best,
you are so wack,
i have to make up for my insecurity and lack of confidence
that i am in denial of with the schoolyard art of dissing"

honestly, most rap makes me embarrased. even the lyricists
i listen to get sucked into the ol' fuck you love me scheme,
but a lot of these people don't do any thing else. IT IS
BORING!

offline manticore from London (ON) (Canada) on 2003-04-25 22:08 [#00669478]

GZA - 'liquid swords' - arguably the best of the wu-tang
related side-projects. tight production (RZA kept it sharp
for this one!), not too shabby rhymes. sure, it may not rank
with the top-10, but it's worth a listen.

and for those dissing rap, you obviously have not had much
of a chance to acquaint yourself with what i call "bottom
40" (as in underground hip-hop with a lyrical content far
beyond 'booty' and 'bitches')

here's a small list of thinking man's rap:
001: Buck 65 'Square' & 'Man Overboard'
anything and everything by Atmosphere
002: Mr.Lif 'I phantom'
003: Sole 'Bottle of Humans'
004: Sixtoo 'Psyche Intangible'; 'Psyche Continuum'; 'Songs
I Hate (and other people moments)
005: Recyclone 'Numbers'
006: Company Flow 'Funcrusher Plus'
007: Snoop Doggy Dogg "Doggystyle"
(though i'm not that sure about that last one! hehe!)

I definately agree with the gza recommendation, and although
the 2nd bobby digital mistake was a step up from the
previous one, it's still territory rza has no good reason to
be on. it's a thinly veiled excuse to partake in the excess
and frivolity that has been so prevalent in the "hip-hop"
that has been embraced (this came AFTER, mind you, wu-tang
was the biggest hting in the hip-hop world for at least 2-3
years for doing their OWN).. I just dont see the point in
paying rza anymore attention that I would anyone else who
does exactly what he's trying to emulate here. it just
doesnt make sense to me. especially when they get outside
production help and when their inside production makes
attempts to sound like other producers. the distinctive
qualities in their music and their poetry/message has been
lost since about 1998.

same happens to me... when it comes about hip hop I prefer
to see what titsworht thinks... it makes me feel I am really
doing the right thing... but also archrival and theo seem to
be good knowers

I know I may get a lot of crap over this one because that's
always what happens when you question the "elite" members of
this board but out of curiousity, what makes tits the
definitive voice on hiphop to you? Is it because you know
him for being into hiphop the longest on this board, or is
it that you really don't know jack about hiphop and take his
replies for granted because it looks knowledgable to you as
a layman?

yeah it is and its pathetic and does the genre no real good
but due to the shock value of some rappers that crap
persists.
for me im old school rap if at all

boogie down productions - stop the violence
public enemy - it takes a nation of millions to hold us
back

Cypress Hill - Black Sunday
House of Pain - Same as it ever was
every from the ole Soul Assasins label!

pomme, if it's not too late, i think a nice red wine sauce
would be absolutely exquisite with your roasted duck.

and to the rest of you:

uhhh.... heh ;)
i don't know what to say really. i love me some "black
music" but if i'm not on don't wait for me to say something.
personally when it comes to hip-hop i highly value the
opinions of people on here like pomme-o, theo himself,
ArchRival (the KING of hip-hop on xltronic, bar none), and
Meho (let's not forget!), not to mention thethirdball and
corngrower! a lot of people here really know their stuff
when it comes to hip-hop. i'm flattered people see me as
some kind of expert on this music, but really i'm not, i'm
just a big fan like some others here.

hip-hop topics seem to come up every week. my advice for
those curious is to simply look up (using the Search feature
on the left) words like "hiphop" "rapper" "emcee"
"clouddead" "roots" "kweli" "mainstream" and decide for
yourself what kind of hip-hop it is that you want to
explore. i certainly don't have a handle on "white rap" and
certain other branches of hip-hop so if you want advice on
people like sage francis, sole, murs, slug, etc. i'm not the
one to come to.

hee hee, I haven't heard anybody mention MSI in a long
time.
OK is right: 90% of anything mainstream or readily audible
is going to disappoint. but discarding hip hop as an entire
genre would really be stupid and devastating. there's SO
MUCH fucking great intelligent hip hop out there that people
just ignore, it makes me crazy.

even the underground. you can find a lot of underground
hip-hop that is less ridiculous than the mainstream, but the
scene is still flooded with embarassing self-confidence
issues.

i know what you mean but there is still a plethora of
quality releases that aren't like that...theyre often harder
to find out about but theyre there.
