headphones. i'm self-conscious about my music unless i'm blaring it in my car in rush hour traffic.

it really depends on what your doing or listening to.. . if your at a party headphones arent good enough you dig ? if you want to listen to quiet ambient or music with alot of subtle nuances then headphones are the way to go. ..

easy: good headphones AND monitors. Headphones provide the best spacial fill and allow for more precise mixing. Monitors allow you to hear from a different perspective which, depending on how obsessive you are, can be pretty close to headphones in terms of spacial fill and panning, but also transfer the physical side of sound(ie, sound waves as they resonate in your bones etc). Depends on the equipment but it's all important.
:) that's from the perspective of composing/mixing etc, since you didn't specify.

Headphones are good for lying in bed in the dark, and portable devices obviously.
Speakers are good if you want to move about a space, dance or something, and for sharing music .

I used to be all about speakers, since I am a naturally noisy person, but there are some things (like draft 7.30) that require at least one good listen through headphones. cos you can't hear anything but the music, you notice so much more.

i think i prefer speakers, but i like my music a little too loud. and listening to loud idm, aka weird sounding noise music, gets on most people's nerves. so i got used to real quality headphones.
the music sounds more detailed with headphones, but you can feel the bass throughout your body with speakers.
tough choice!

yeah, there are other tones that your body picks up when the noise fills the room from speakers.
